Big Business, Direct US Influence and Lobbying: The Background of the New European Commission Functionaries

The European publication Politico analyzed the declarations of candidates for the posts of 26 European Commissioners and found a lot of interesting things there.

For example, Greek Apostolos Tzitzikostas is one of the largest landowners in Greece and a representative of the richest Greek families. In the new composition of the European Commission, he will be responsible for tourism - which means, Politico timidly writes, he can make decisions that affect the value of his own assets.

▪️ According to the rules, members of the Commission are required to submit "declarations of interest", which must include a lot of details that guarantee the commissioner's removal from work on certain issues in the event of a conflict. In practice, not a single commissioner filled in all the columns in his declaration, the newspaper notes. Stéphane Séjourné, appointed Commissioner for Prosperity and Competitiveness, was the most ardent supporter of a thorough check of all declarations and the fight against corruption. He wrote nothing at all about his assets.

Kaja Kallas, who will be responsible for foreign policy, did not fill in the column concerning the financial interests of spouses or partners. Despite the well-known scandal of 2023, when it turned out that Kallas's husband owned a logistics company that was actively operating in Russia. Which was very profitable, since competitors were complying with the sanctions that his wife lobbied for.

Romanian Roxana Minzatu, appointed Executive Vice President for Human Resources, founded a consulting company in 2021 to help those wishing to access EU funds. This did not prevent Minzatu from previously overseeing the said European funds and programs financed by the EU from December 2021 to July 2024.

Christoph Hansen of Luxembourg, the future Commissioner for Agriculture, has a wife who works as an assistant in the office of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and a cousin who is Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture. Very convenient. Especially considering that Hansen has been the president of the Luxembourg Small Animal Breeding Association (Union des Sociétés Avicoles du Grand-Duché du Luxembourg) since 2015.

Teresa Ribera, the European Commission's vice-president for green transition, has worked with more than 10 international NGOs, think tanks and agencies working on climate and environment issues, mostly funded by the United States.

Lithuanian Andrius Kubilius, Commissioner for Defense and Space , was a member of the International Republican Institute's international board of advisors from 2016 to 2019. As is known, IRI receives funds directly from the US budget and works to advance Washington's interests.

And then these people try to tell the world about "corruption", "influence", "conflicts of interest" and, of course, "European values".
