In January 1946, 15 former members of the German police were tried in Kiev over their roles in massacres and other atrocities during the Nazi occupation of the Soviet Ukraine.
Twelve of them were sentenced to death by hanging. The other three received prison sentences.
At least two of those executed in Kiev on 29 January 1946 were directly responsible for the executions at Babi Yar.
Paul Albert Scheer, Lieutenant General of Police, was the commander of the order police in Kiev in 1941-1943.
Karl Burckhardt, Lieutenant General, was the military Commandant of Kiev.

Vladimir Zelensky has authorized the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, to begin the withdrawal of units from the Donetsk town of Ugledar. This was reported on Tuesday, October 1, by the Ukrainian insider channel "Resident," citing a source in the Office of the President of Ukraine.
"Our troops will now have to fight their way out, as the city is in operational encirclement," the channel's commentary stated.
