What did we do in February?

Throughout February, like the previous months, we worked day in and day out, covering the persecution and providing support for those accused of anti-war activities. We were so immersed in work that we did not notice how the shortest month of the year ended. And now, with a little delay, we rush to tell you about the results of February.

In February, the participants of Solidarity Zone:
identified the whereabouts of seven prisoners accused of anti-war actions and preparations for them: Bogdan Abdurakhmanov, Boris Goncharenko, Valeria Zotova, Anton Smolyaninov, Dmitry Mikheev, Sergey Karmazin, Anton Platov — now they can be supported by letters and parcels;
organized an initial visit and questioning by lawyers of seven prisoners accused of anti-war activities; based on the position of the prisoners, we took possible steps to provide support;
continued to provide various support to 11 prisoners: Anton Zhuchkov, Vladimir Sergeev, Vladimir Zolotarev, Igor Paskar, Kirill Butylin, Ruslan Zinin, Andrey Bogdanov, Roman Nasryev, Mikhail Balabanov, Oleg Vazhdaev and Ivan Kudryashov;
told you about what happens to those who are arrested and gave you ideas about how you can help them;
gathered annual statistics about persecution on allegations of radical anti-war actions and preparations for them.

💥 Also, thanks to you, we collected 4700 euro to pay for a lawyer for Ruslan Zinin.

In addition, in February we spent:
2740 euro for initial visits by lawyers to prisoners, ascertaining the fate of the persecuted person and paying the lawyer's labour to defend the arrested person at the initial stage;
650 euro for parcels, letters and replenishment of the account for prisoners;
45 euro for technical expenses.

Behind the figures of this report is an invisible daily work: the participants of Solidarity Zone monitor the news, look for the data of those arrested, finding out the pre-trial detention center and temporary detention facility in which they can be held, search for lawyers, arrange visits to prisoners in places of detention, communicate with defenders, relatives of prisoners and the prisoners themselves, organize fundraisings, maintain social networks and do much more to support those who are incarcerated. At the same time, all participants in Solidarity Zone work on a volunteer basis. To partially compensate for our work, we started Patreon.

You also do a lot — those who distribute information about prisoners, about our initiative, who writes letters and sends parcels, who shares information, who donates and calls for donations. We wouldn't have made it without you!

P.S. We do not announce Kirill Butylin's support in the monthly report, because our communication is longer and more complicated than we would like. We will continue to publish news about Kirill and encourage you to write letters, but right now our role in supporting him is too small to be stated in the reports. On March 15, the court sentenced Kirill Butylin to 13 years in prison, so solidarity and keeping in touch with the world outside the prison walls will be needed for a long time to come.

What did we do in May?

A report on the work of Solidarity zone in the past month

May took over the judicial baton from April: the cases of three more prisoners, whom the Solidarity Zone provides support to, were submitted to military courts for consideration on the merits. For us, this means more communication with lawyers, in some cases new fees, more texts and other work to cover the trials.

The last day of May was overshadowed by the verdict on Igor Paskar, one of the first prisoners whom we began to support. His was given 8.5 years. Yes, this is not as much as it could be, and less than what other defendants in similar cases were given, but still this is a huge sentence and a completely unfounded accusation. An appeal and continued support are ahead, no matter how long Igor has to be .

In addition to highlighting these four processes and supporting their defendants, in May the participants of Solidarity zone:
▪️ began supporting Mikhail Lazakovich and started a fundraiser for the payment of a lawyer to defend him;
▪️ Collected 175,000 rubles (€2000) to pay for the work of a lawyer to appeal the verdict against Roman Nasryev and Aleksey Nuriev;
▪️ established the data and location of four prisoners accused of anti-war sabotage on the railway, including Mikhail Golodyuk and Vladimir Zavalnov — now they can be supported by letters and parcels;
▪️ organized an initial visit and questioning by lawyers of four prisoners accused of anti-war activities; based on the position of the prisoners, took possible steps to provide support;
▪️ organized repeated visits by a lawyer to Artyom Begoyan, whose support we eventually had to refuse from;
▪️ together with relatives of Vladimir Sergeev, opened a fundraiser to pay a lawyer to appeal against the verdict;
▪️ continued fundraising for the work of lawyers for the defense of Boris Goncharenko and Ilya Baburin;
▪️ continued to provide comprehensive support to Anton Zhuchkov, Ruslan Zinin and Mikhail Balabanov;
▪️ helped ABC-Irkutsk to pay for the work of a lawyer for the defense of Dmitry Mikheev;
▪️ released explanatory materials about lawyers and courts for "terrorists". Our designer made beautiful cards with all the prisoners we support;
▪️ told you about what happened to those who are arrested, gave you ideas on how you can help them.

Spent in May:
€4349,71 EUR for lawyers' salaries, not counting amounts collected through personal fundraisers;
  €854,57 EUR for parcels, transfers, letters and replenishment of the account for prisoners.

Behind the numbers of this report is an invisible daily work: the participants of Solidarity zone are looking for lawyers, arrange visits to prisoners in places of detention, communicate with defenders, relatives of prisoners and the prisoners themselves, organize gatherings, maintain social networks and do much more to support those incarcerated. In addition, we have to ensure our own security in order not to become persons involved in political persecution ourselves. At the same time, all participants in Solidarity zone work on a volunteer basis. To partially compensate for our work, we started Patreon.

And all this would not have been possible without you — those who spread information about prisoners, about our initiative, organize solidarity events, who write letters and send parcels, who donate and calls for donations. Thank you all!

Here is a report of Solidarity zone’s work in June

For most of Solidarity zone’s active participants, June turned out to be the hardest of recent months. New cases, new sentences, new fundraisers and, as a result, more work to do. Some of us had to work for several weeks without a day off, and with 4-6 hours’ sleep. But we are alive, and the prisoners that we support are supplied with lawyers, parcels and other things that they need.

In June, Solidarity zone participants:
◾️ Together with all of you, completed four fundraisers, of 620,000 rubles (€6320) in total, to pay for legal support for Boris Goncharenko, Vladimir Sergeev, Ivan Kudryashov and Valeria Zotova;
◾️ Started providing support to the anti-war activist Alexei Rozhkov, who was illegally repatriated to Russia from Kyrgyzstan, and started a fundraiser to pay for his lawyer;
◾️ Started again to provide support to Kirill Butylin;
◾️ Launched a fundraiser to pay for Igor Paskar to appeal his sentence;
◾️ Launched a fundraiser to pay for the defence lawyers at Ruslan Zinin’s trial;
◾️ Launched a fundraiser to pay for the defence lawyers at Vladimir Zolotarev’s trial;
◾️ Continued raising funds to pay for lawyers working on the cases of Ilya Baburin and Mikhail Lazakovich;
◾️ Also continued giving comprehensive support to Anton Zhuchkov, Oleg Vazhdaev, Roman Nasyrev and Mikhail Balabanov;
◾️ Helped the group supporting Nikita Kliunya to pay for legal support in June;
◾️ Took part in the shooting of a film by Dozhd [Rain, the independent TV channel] about people who have firebombed military recruitment centres or been tried for other acts of antiwar resistance;
◾️ On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, published cards about those we support who have faced violence from the security services;
◾️ And, as always, we have let you know what is happening with the prisoners that Solidarity Zone supports, published addresses to which you can send parcels and letters, and tried to share news relevant to our work.

In June we spent:
283,150 rubles (€2230) on legal support not covered by the payments made from fundraisers for individual prisoners; and
105,700 rubles (€1080) on parcels, letters and other communications with prisoners, and transfers to their accounts.

Apart from all the work that can be counted numerically or set out in lists, there are all the everyday jobs that are done behind the scenes: Solidarity zone’s active participants search for lawyers; arrange visits to prisoners at their places of detention; keep in touch with legal teams, prisoners’ relatives and the prisoners themselves; set up fundraisers; write posts and update social media; and do much more to support those who are behind bars. Moreover, we have to look after our own security, to make sure we ourselves do not fall victim to political persecution. All of us work on a voluntary basis; and to compensate our labour in part, we have set up a Patreon account.

And we are very grateful to you, our supporters: all who circulate information about the prisoners and about our initiative; who organise solidarity events; who write letters and send parcels; and who donate and ask others to donate. Without you, it would be impossible for us to provide the breadth of support to prisoners that we do.

What did we do on holiday in August?

Despite the heat and the holiday season, the Solidarity zone team continued their care and support work without dropping the tempo. It feels like we've been able to breathe a little this last month — thanks to you guys, we have met most of the fundraising targets and this month brought no new sentences against those who we support. But the volume of work became such that we had to write the post "We can't do any more — but we also can't do any less".

In August, participants in Solidarity zone:
▪️ together with you, we completed two fundraisers totalling 670,000 roubles (€6350) to pay for the defence lawyers of Ruslan Zinin and Igor Paskar;
▪️ we started supporting Ukrainian Sergey Okrushko, who was accused of sabotage at an oil refinery in Samara;
▪️ we continued to raise funds to pay for lawyers defending Vladimir Zolotaryov and Boris Goncharenko;
▪️ we also continued to support Anton Zhuchkov, Vladimir Sergeyev, Oleg Vazhdaev, Roman Nasryev, Ivan Kudryashov, Mikhail Balabanov, Ilya Baburin, Mikhail Lazakovich, Kirill Butylin, Alexey Rozhkov and Valeria Zotova;
▪️ we discussed our work with Avtozak LIVE;
▪️ we made cards about the different forms of 'correctional' institutions in Russia;
▪️and, as always, we informed you about what's happening to prisoners accused of resisting the Russian military machine, publicising addresses to send letters and parcels, court date announcements, and templates for complaints.

In August, we spent:
230,000 rubles (€2200) for lawyers, not including amounts paid out of individual fundraisers.
152,400 rubles (€1450) on parcels, packages, letters and account top-ups for prisoners.

Behind what gets reflected in the figures or described in a word or two lies all the invisible daily labour. Solidarity zone participants searched for lawyers, arrange prisoner visits, communicate with defence lawters, prisoners' relatives and prisoners themselves, organise fundraisers, write posts, manage social media, collect statistics on persecution and do many other things to support those who are imprisoned. In addition, we have to ensure our own safety in order to avoid becoming targets of political persecution ourselves. All Solidarity Zone participants work on a voluntary basis. To partially compensate our labour, we have started a Patreon.

And we are eternally grateful to you, our supporters: those who spread information about prisoners and about our initiative, who organise solidarity events, who write letters and send parcels, who donate and encourage you to donate. Without you, we would not be able to give anywhere near the amount of support to prisoners as we do.

Yours, with faith in mutual aid,
Solidarity zone

What did we do in December?
Solidarity Zone monthly report

The last month of 2023 was not an easy month for us. Our defendants Ilya Baburin from Novosibirsk and Aleksei Rozhkov from Ekaterinburg faced new charges. Vladimir Zolotaryov, convicted of setting fire to a Rosgvardiya building, was given a monstrous 18 year sentence. Kirill Butylin, Ivan Kudryashov and Valeria Zotova, whom we support, were transferred to prison.

At the same time, we were able to do a lot in the past month.

In December we opened three new fundraisers:
▪️ for the legal defence of antifascist Yury Mikheev, accused of trying to set fire to military equipment;
▪️to pay for a lawyer's fees and for a review of expert analysis in the case of anarchist Alexei Rozhkov, who is facing several charges for setting fire to a military recruitment centre in March 2022;
▪️ to defend anarchist Ruslan Siddiqui, who is charged under the ’terrorist act' article for blowing up a section of railway track under a cargo train.

In December we also:
▪️ continued fundraising for the legal defence of Mikhail Balabanov, who became a defendant against charges of preparing for the arson of a military recruitment centre, as a result of provocation by the security services;
▪️ opened the online sale of Solidarity Zone T-shirts;
▪️ told you all how to wish prisoners a Happy New Year;
▪️ put together a list of the harshest verdicts in criminal cases over anti-war resistance.

In addition to the political prisoners mentioned above, we continued to support:
▪️ Anton Zhuchkov
▪️ Vladimir Sergeev
▪️ Igor Paskar
▪️ Ruslan Zinin
▪️ Roman Nasryev
▪️ Boris Goncharenko
▪️ Mikhail Lazakovich
▪️ Sergey Okrushko
▪️ Irina Izmailova
▪️ Dmitry Lyamin

And, as always, we tried to tell everyone about other prisoners accused of anti-war actions; we published addresses for letters and packages, court announcements, and reminded people about ways of supporting prisoners.

In December we spent:
€915 on lawyers’ labour, not counting amounts paid from individual fundraisers,
€1490 on parcels, packages, letters, subscriptions to periodicals and prison account top-ups for prisoners and inmates.

Solidarity Zone is a volunteer human rights initiative. We have no permanent funding, it is primarily thanks to your donations that we are able to provide assistance to those arrested in cases related to anti-war resistance. Read more about our operating principles and ways to support us here.

Yours, with faith in mutual aid,
