Dear Members of the School of Social Work Telegram Channel,
It is summer, and the Addis Ababa University Postgraduate Study registration period is fast approaching. One of the major challenges faced by individuals who wish to pursue postgraduate studies is the lack of accurate information. The registration period is often filled with uncertainty, confusion, and distorted perceptions, causing many qualified applicants to miss the opportunity to continue their education because of unrealistic fears and misinformation.
There is often confusion regarding admission criteria, tuition fees, and scholarship opportunities. To address these challenges, the School of Social Work would like to support prospective applicants by establishing a team that will provide accurate and timely information about AAU's postgraduate programs.
We will soon announce the communication channels through which you can reach us and obtain the information you need.
Stay prepared to pursue your postgraduate studies and become more competitive in the job market. Most importantly, do not forget that the School of Social Work is ready to admit you, teach you, and help you become outstanding helping professionals.

We promised to provide information about Addis Ababa University's postgraduate programs. Let's start with the basics.
Anyone who wishes to join a postgraduate program at Addis Ababa University (AAU) must have at least a bachelor's degree, pass the Addis Ababa University Graduate Admission Test (GAT), and fulfill the specific admission requirements of the department they wish to join.
Departmental admission requirements vary. Some departments require applicants to take an additional entrance examination, while others do not. Similarly, some departments have a minimum undergraduate CGPA requirement, whereas others do not consider CGPA as part of their admission criteria. Therefore, we encourage prospective applicants to contact the department they are interested in directly to learn about its specific admission requirements.
However, before applying to a department, you must first register for the Addis Ababa University Graduate Admission Test (GAT). Anyone who wishes to enroll in an AAU postgraduate program must take Addis Ababa University's GAT, not the Graduate Admission Test administered by the Ministry of Education.
The University announces the GAT registration period each year. Last year, the registration fee was 1,100 ETB. Due to inflation, the fee may be slightly higher this year.
The GAT assesses applicants' proficiency in English language as well as their basic mathematics and statistics skills. The exam is generally comparable in difficulty to the Grade 12 National Aptitude Test.
Applicants who do not achieve a passing score on the GAT may retake the exam as many times as they wish, provided they pay the required registration fee for each attempt. The University announces the passing score together with the examination. In recent years, the passing score has typically been 50% or lower.
In our next post, we will provide information about scholarship opportunities at Addis Ababa University.

A Very Kind Request for Participating in Professional Opinion Survey @https://ee.kobotoolbox.org/x/mdupZL9d
In Ethiopia, Social Work was first established as an academic discipline at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in the late 1950s. However, in 1974, the program was banned under an ideological allegation that labeled it as a tool serving the political interests of imperialism. After a prolonged hiatus of three decades, an opportunity for revival emerged through the “Social Work Education in Ethiopia Partnership” project. This initiative enabled the restoration of Social Work at AAU in 2004, launching the country’s first-ever Master’s program in the field. Now actively running BSW, MSW and PhD programs, the School of Social Work will mark its 22nd in just two months. At this historical juncture, we firmly believe that social work must evolve into a regulated profession, in which practitioners are licensed based on clearly defined educational requirements, professional standards, and ethical principles. Such regulation is essential not only for enhancing the quality of professional services but also for safeguarding the welfare of client populations. To this end, the AAU School of Social Work, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs and with the support of UNICEF, has been actively engaged in drafting the Ethiopian National Social Work Act. As part of our efforts to ensure the draft is grounded in evidence, we have designed a professional opinion survey, which is one of the multiple data collection tools we are employing. I, on behalf of the Technical Team, kindly invite all social work practitioners, educators, and students throughout Ethiopia to contribute their valuable insights by taking a moment to complete the survey via the link below. Your time and participation are greatly appreciated!
