In the pursuit of happiness in our daily activities, we may encounter dissatisfaction or suffering.
We, then, become absorbed into suffering and constantly drown ourselves in negativity.

So what is this "suffering" and how do we make sense of it?

Join us this coming Thursday as we explore two out of the four noble truths - The Truth of Suffering and The Truth of the Cause of Suffering.

"Is it because of your religion?" โ€ฆ โ€œAs a Buddhist, you can't do this right?"

Do these questions sound familiar? We often associate what we can or cannot do to our religion. Indeed, there is no denying that some of our decision making is based on our faith. But whatโ€™s the intention behind our choices. Is it out of Fear? Obligation? Commitment?

Morality is integral in the practice of Buddhism. Many have pledged to untertake the moral code, known as the 5 precepts, to live a life guided by morality.

Join us this coming Thursday as we unpack the Buddhist moral code and explore the motivations behind them.

Weโ€™ve all heard or personally remarked the phrase โ€œwhat goes around comes aroundโ€ at some point in our lives. But weโ€™ve also encountered the thought that some people do so much good, yet life doesnโ€™t seem to reciprocate that goodness to them. So, why the discrepancy?

Join us next session to find out what the theory of Kamma is in Buddhism, and what benefit it can bring to our lives through understanding it.

Happy recess week, and we will see y'all soon in the next session! ๐Ÿฅณ
In competitive Singapore, we often find ourselves lost in the rat race towards some material goal. โ€œI need this internshipโ€โ€ฆโ€I need a high salaryโ€โ€ฆโ€I need a partnerโ€

Once we achieve the goal, however, our thirst for more never seems to stop and we strive for the next best thing.

Is this "thirst for more" necessarily bad? Is it possible to be contented and at the same time be ambitious? How do we reach this balance?

Join us as we welcome Sayalay Sujata to share her perspective on this pertinent predicament.

Sayalay Sujata is a former banker turned Buddhist nun who received her monastic and meditation training in Myanmar. She actively engages with youths and aspires to journey with all who wish to progress in spiritual cultivation and lead a more mindful life.

Change is inevitable. We know this ... but in our busy lives, we tend to forget this fact. It is not until one day when we lose what we love, when things are no longer the same, that we experience a sudden sense of loss and pain.

Join us this coming Thursday as we discuss the concept of impermanence and the Buddha's recommendation on how we should reflect on the nature of impermanence in our lives.

Weโ€™ve heard of terms such as โ€œwholesome livingโ€ and โ€œbeing wholesomeโ€.

Is wholesomeness just some abstract concept? What does it mean to live a wholesome life or be a wholesome person? How can we apply it to our daily lives?

Join us this Thursday for an evening of meditation and a lighthearted discussion on the path towards wholesomeness from the Buddhist perspective.

Itโ€™s the last session of the semester. See you there!

[Week 2] Wise Speech - Countering Toxicity

Words are powerful. They can heal yet they can also destroy.

In our lives, we may have been hurt by what others say and the pain we feel continues to linger. Other times, we may have said hurtful things and like a falling domino, one careless remark leads to another and we find ourselves unable to clean up the mess we have caused.

Does this mean that we should always remain silent? Is it possible to speak in a truthful way which creates harmony and counters toxicity?

Join us next Thursday for a discussion on why skilful speaking is important and how we can speak mindfully to create a more wholesome environment for ourselves and those around us.

Touched by happiness and then by suffering,

The sage shows no sign of being elated or depressed.โ€

- Dhammapada 81-83

[Week 6] Faith: Through a Buddhist Lens

Buddhism is often promoted as a religion built on inquiry and decisive inquiry.

We do not worship or deify the Buddha as our god. The Buddha himself mentioned that we should not take something as true just because he mentions it, as he encourages people to truly understand principles for themselves.

However, we also often see the presence of Buddhist rituals, festivals and practices by practicing Buddhists.

What are those, if not expressions of faith?

Who, or what, do Buddhists have faith in? What is the role of faith in Buddhism, and what does it stand for?

Join us this coming Thursday to find out more.

[Week 10] Living the Dhamma - Venerable Tenzin Drachom

โ€œIn Tibetan, โ€˜draโ€™ means delusion, and โ€˜chomโ€™ means destroyer.

In the military, I destroyed the enemy outside.

Now I destroy the enemy inside.โ€

- Ven. Tenzin Drachom

As a former Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Special Forces Commando turned monk, Venerable Drachom once said that the discipline that one needs as a monk to live the dhamma is the same as the discipline one needs as a soldier.
