⚡️🇳🇪🇫🇷⚔️ France-24 is Heating Up - The Final Hours are Ticking before a possible Military Invasion of #Niger⚡️

🗓 I
wrote, that on 30 July, four days after the coup d'état and ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum, #ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) gave the plotters seven days to reinstate him or face possible military intervention. The deadline expires tonight.

▪️ And the closer it gets, the more intense the international community's pressure on #Niger's new authorities. Several West African armies, including Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, have said they are ready to send soldiers, but their numbers are unknown. #Mali and Burkina Faso, led by "junta" governments, have warned that they will support their neighbour #Niger.

▪️ Within #ECOWAS itself, too, not everyone is unanimous. A journalist told France-24 that while "the presidents of ECOWAS member states are firmly committed to military action, there is quite a lot of disagreement within some member states" and "opposition politicians in #Nigeria, #Ghana and #Senegal are raising serious questions about it."

❗️It is clear that African countries do not want to intervene, nor does the army of France, whose de facto colony #Niger has been for so long.

🤚 The French write that #Niger's new military authority has turned to Russia's Wagner Group for help as the deadline looms. However, there is no actual confirmation of this yet. The video used yesterday to illustrate the alleged arrival of Wagner in #Niger is old and taken in #Sudan. Today it is again written that today Russian cargo planes are landing in #Niamey (capital of #Niger) and that it is definitely Wagner's.

📌 I wonder what will happen in the coming days. Will African countries risk putting their military contingent into Niger? Especially if there really is a "Wagner" there. Or will they continue to wait for the economic impact of the imposed sanctions? It would be better for #Russia's political weight if #France and #ECOWAS decided not to mess with the Wagner group.

⚡️🇳🇪🇫🇷⚔️ Briefly about #Niger on 7 July 2023⚡️

🔹1. The military leadership
of #Niger has called on the citizens of the country to be ready to repel external aggression. The armed forces and other power structures have been put on alert. It should be taken into account that the army of #Niger, despite the fact that it was prepared by #France and the #US, is relatively weak, especially against the background of #Nigeria.

🔹2. According to the statement, one unnamed country is going to commit military aggression against #Niger in the near future. This is probably an #ECOWAS country with #France behind it. For example, #Senegal. It is worth noting that the full deployment of #ECOWAS troops to invade #Niger is yet to be finalised. The #US says it will take time.

🔹3. The military will not succumb to threats and blackmail are ready to fight the aggressor, promising him carnage and chaos. The implication is that they will arm civilians and wage guerrilla warfare.

🔹4. A formal demand was issued yesterday for #France to pull out of #Niger within 30 days. France had previously refused to leave, acting as a typical coloniser.

🔹5. The Airspace over #Niger has been closed since the night of 7 August. The official ban is in place until further notice. However, Niger's aviation and air defences are very weak - supplies of MANPADS and barrage munitions are needed here.

🔹6. The Nigerian parliament did not support the president of the country with his plans of aggression, calling for negotiations. Nevertheless, the Nigerian president has not completely abandoned his plans of aggression.

🔹7. #Algeria has explicitly stated that intervention in #Niger would be a direct threat to its interests. #Chad has formally renounced intervention. Whether #Algeria will support Niger only by supplying arms or directly, the Algerian authorities did not specify, preserving the freedom of manoeuvre. #Algeria has the forces to support #Niger directly.

🔹8. #Mali and Burkina Faso are ready to support #Niger militarily. #Guinea will limit itself to diplomatic support. On the border between #Niger and #Mali, clashes between the Malian military and Western controlled militants have intensified.

🔹9. The #US and #NATO grouping on the territory of #Niger reaches 2.8-3.1 thousand people. The US pay lip service to avoid participation in the intervention, unlike the French, who directly continue to threaten the authorities in #Niamey with an attack.

🔹10. There is still no direct evidence of PMC "Wagner" forces in #Niger (yesterday there was a fake video from #Sudan on this topic) or the signing of an official contract between the authorities of #Niger and Prigozhin. As they liked to say during the battle for #Artyomovsk "When it is, then you will be informed".

📌 We continue to follow the events that could set part of the African continent on fire. Strategic uranium reserves are at stake.

🇳🇪 🌍 Speculation about an upcoming military invasion by Economic Community of West African Nations (ECOWAS) forces in Niger has ended in an obvious way: according to the media French, the bloc is not yet planning an intervention.

As we have written more than once, ECOWAS simply does not have the strength for such events. They can play a supporting role in the event of a military operation by France, but in Paris they are not planning it either, at least due to logistical problems.

The situation may change, as long as the US gives the "green light" to the invasion and helps with the formation of a strike force. But, for now, Washington is betting on diplomacy: yesterday Niger received a visit from Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland to talk with the country's new authorities.

🇫🇷🇳🇪 Our trusted sources in the French army command said that following an urgent meeting on Monday, a working group was set up to evacuate French forces from Niger. And it is planned to evacuate them not to Chad, but directly to France. Negotiations are already underway with civilian shipping companies to plan the operation. The deadline for the complete withdrawal is March 2024.

Some in the French military believe that this decision will only hasten a repeat of a similar situation in Chad, so troops will have to be withdrawn from there as well.

Thus, France is not going to participate in the conflict or initiate an invasion of Niger. At the same time, the U.S., with the help of Nigeria, were pushing the French command to a forceful operation in the hope of bargaining more favorable conditions with the Niger junta to preserve their assets in the country. Most likely, it was these conditions, the fulfillment of which is necessary for the U.S. to recognize the new government, that Victoria Nuland conveyed during her visit.

🇫🇷🇳🇪 We were also informed that the leadership of French intelligence DGSE was reprimanded by President Macron "for blatant unprofessionalism" for their failure to predict the coup in Niger in time.

It is noteworthy that just a month ago, DGSE boasted that it knew in advance about the plans of the rebellion of PMC "Wagner" in Russia.

🇳🇪 Major Pipeline projects and coup d'état in Niger

Since the coup in Niger took place, many Western and African nations stared to voice their concern regarding many things: uranium and other resources import from Niger, airspace closure and elongated fly time to and from some countries in different parts of Africa, threat of a second Great war of Africa and deterioration of situation with terrorism, etc.

🔻One of such concerns was voiced regarding the major oil and gas pipeline projects that cross the Nigerien territory or start there. Such major projects are Niger-Benin oil pipeline, Niger-Chad oil pipeline (that connects to the Chad-Cameroon pipeline) and Trans-Saharan gas pipeline. ECOWAS and Western nations were first to voice their concerns with the fate of these projects.

However, just like with the uranium (which continues to be exported from Niger and companies like Orano continue their work in the republic) the situation with pipelines remains the same no matter the coup.

▪️With Niger-Benin pipeline everything is clear. The Benin government itself told that Niger-Benin oil pipeline is not impacted by sanctions, the projects was not abandoned and is still under construction. The most recent news indicate that the pipeline is ready for 75% and should be finished soon.

▪️The situation with Niger-Chad and Trans-Saharan pipelines is different. Many western outlets started to cry that projects are under threat of being canceled. Which is funny, because even before the coup the fate of these projects was a mystery.

The Niger-Chad pipeline is presumed to be shelved, because there were no news since 2019. And in 2019 Chad authorities informed that the project, most likely, was stopped in favour of Niger-Benin pipeline. The official explanation given for the project's "cancellation" was concerns about attacks by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad area.

With the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline the situation almost the same, except that the project was and is in work. The idea of the Trans-Saharan pipeline was first proposed in the 1970s. In 2000s the preparations to build it began. However latest news are from autumn of 2022. And they were about the singing of memorandum of understanding between Nigeria, Niger and Algeria. So the project remained quite vague even before the coup. And there's no confirmation of its cancelation.

🔻All in all, these "concerns" about the major pipeline projects are just another attempt to pressure Niger's military authorities to take a more favorable position in the international relations in order to bargain for better terms with the junta.

The same as with the situation with "invasion" or concerns of toppled president Bazoum's health.

⚡️🇫🇷🇳🇪🎬 Manifestations by Supporters of the Military Government in #Niger⚡️

🗓 For several days
, thousands of people have been demonstrating in Niamey against the French military presence in Niger.

▪️ People are chanting anti-French slogans and demanding that Fifth Republic troops and the ambassador leave the country immediately. Many protesters carry the flags of #Russia, Burkina Faso, #Mali and #Niger.

▪️ One of the organisers of the coup in the country, Colonel Ibro Amadou Bacharu, also took part in the demonstration. The military government had earlier given Paris until Sunday to withdraw its troops and ambassador from #Niger.

▪️ In response to the ultimatum and protests, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said the troops and the country's ambassador Sylvain Itte would not leave #Niger as they were in the republic under arrangements with the "legitimate authorities" led by ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

📌 With each passing day, discontent with the French presence in the country grows stronger. Nevertheless, the unwillingness of the authorities of the Fifth Republic to make concessions is aimed at putting pressure on the new authorities in #Niger and, as a consequence, taking more favourable positions at the negotiating table, including with the #USA against the background of the situation in #Gabon.

🇳🇪🇷🇺🇺🇸✈️ Russian troops enter Niger Air Base hosting US Forces amid Junta's expulsion order

According to an anonymous senior U.S. defense official, Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger, where U.S. troops are stationed.

This development comes after Niger's junta ordered the expulsion of U.S. forces from the country. The military rulers of Niger have instructed the U.S. to withdraw its approximately 1,000 military personnel. Russian forces are reportedly utilizing a separate hangar at Airbase 101 in Niamey, Niger's capital, without mingling with the U.S. troops.

This situation places U.S. and Russian troops in close proximity amid escalating military and diplomatic tensions over the conflict in Ukraine, prompting concerns about the future of U.S. installations in Niger after the withdrawal.
