AN ISRAELI NUCLEAR WEAPONS PRODUCTION HISTORICAL ANECDOTE

In 1962 the Cuban nuclear missile Crisis became a big topic. Why had Cuban President Fidel Castro gotten Russia to protect Cuba from America with nuclear missiles? The smoked out Cuban cigar! Would there be a nuclear war? The radioactive turd! Could civilization survive as we knew it? The rum-filled toilet fixture! Would there even be a United States after such a war? More importantly, would our bank accounts survive?

The Soviet Union was more than twice the size of America, had about 30% more people, and was ahead in the space race. Its economy was somewhat smaller but some years grew faster. It was a serious rival. So people racked their brains about what they could do if worse came to worst.

One place where discussion reached a fever pitch was in Miami, Florida. Being before the Cuban and Haitian refugee influx, it was where New York City's largely Zionist Judaic population retired to or at least spent their winters in. And, having been raised in Florida in the 1950s and 60s, I can vouch for Floridians living outside of Miami considering it a Judaic enclave. I also have a story that suggests that this was also the view of the city's inhabitants, as well as the government of Israel, itself.

I heard the story as a 19-year old in Sweden in 1970. I was participating in an after-dinner chat with friends in the comfortable dwelling of a quite elderly lady some of my friends happened to know. The lady was an absolutely charming hostess, who decided to live in a cottage on her estate because it was more convenient than the bigger house her former mother-in-law had had her husband build on the site of an ancient royal palace that was torn down to make way for something more modern. After all, anyone who was anybody in the late 19th century knew that ancient royal palaces were out of fashion.

One of the other guests was a friend of the hostess, a Swedish count who no longer lived in Sweden because he had found greener pastures, being married to a well off member of the Miami enclave and holding down a job at a famous Miami hotel. He had lived a full life, had many interesting stories, and considered the long winters of Sweden to be depressing. Though he thought the Swedish royal family's French Bernadotte peasant ancestry far inferior to his own, he was not a snob and treated everyone with equal charm. As such, his employers in Miami used him as the perfect banquet guest who could always guarantee banquet attendee satisfaction.

One of these occasions was a banquet when the Cuban missile crisis was very much on people's minds in the enclave where many individuals still remembered Europe during World War II. Golda Meir, who was then the foreign minister of Israel, was in the United States and was invited to the banquet as its guest of honor. When it came to making a toast, Mrs. Meir pointed in the direction of Cuba, saying: "I wish to reassure everyone here and to warn Mr. Castro that if Miami is attacked with nuclear missiles, that will be taken as an attack on Israel and the motherland will respond." In response to these words, Mrs. Meir then sat down to thunderous applause.

The toast was not picked up by the press and was considered by the Zionist audience it was addressed to as being so natural in the circumstances as to be immediately forgotten. The Count, however, found the implications to be enormous and spoke with disapproving admiration of Mrs. Meir. It was unforgettable. In the context of the Cuban nuclear missile crisis, what she was implying was that in 1962 Israel could already produce nuclear weapons and, if necessary, in the protection of the motherland or its American colonies, would not hesitate to use them.
