This is because their immune systems have destroyed the islet cells in the pancreas, which are responsible for producing insulin. However, researchers at the Houston Methodist Research Institute have developed a groundbreaking solution: an implantable device containing lab-grown islet cells that can regulate glucose levels automatically, potentially eliminating the need for daily needles.
The primary obstacle to islet cell transplantation has always been immune rejection. In early urban planning, one persistent problem was how to deal with waste and stormwater in crowded cities. Without proper drainage, streets would flood and become unsanitary. This led to the development of sewer systems designed to carry wastewater away from living areas. Some of the earliest large scale examples appeared in ancient civilizations, but modern systems took shape in the 19th century with the use of underground tunnels, gravity based flow, and separated channels for sewage and rainwater. These systems reduced disease, improved living conditions, and allowed cities to grow more densely.
