While most land and aquatic animals are anatomically designed to move forward, the "true crabs" (Brachyura) are famous for their distinctive lateral, or sideways, gait. According to a landmark study published this week in Paleobiology, this trait is not merely a behavioral quirk but a profound anatomical adaptation that emerged roughly 200 million years ago. Researchers found that the shift was driven by a process called "carcinization," in which the body of a long-tailed, lobster-like ancestor became shorter and broader. This structural change allowed the legs to be positioned at the sides of a flat, disc-shaped shell, which maximized stability and speed in the complex, rocky environments of the prehistoric ocean floor.
The primary advantage of walking sideways lies in the mechanical efficiency of the crab’s leg joints.
Unlike human knees, which are hinge-like and allow for a wide range of forward motion, a crab’s legs are restricted by its rigid exoskeleton. Walking forward would require complex rotations that would be slow and energy-intensive. By moving sideways, crabs utilize a "scissoring" motion that requires less muscular effort and allows for rapid bursts of speed to escape predators. The study also revealed that this lateral movement coincided with the rise of modern reef systems, where the ability to quickly slip into narrow crevices provided a significant survival advantage over forward-moving competitors.
This evolutionary path, however, was not universal. The research team identified several "evolutionary dead ends" where certain crab lineages attempted to return to forward walking but eventually went extinct.
This suggests that once the crab’s body plan reached a certain level of lateral specialization, the biological cost of reverting to forward motion became too high. "Evolution is often a one-way street," says evolutionary biologist Dr. Thomas Vance. "The sideways walk was so successful for the Brachyura that it redefined their entire ecological role, making them one of the most successful and diverse groups in the ocean today."
