“The Splendid Source" by Richard Matheson

02 April 2025 at 18:45 (MSK) in Svetlovka library.

American author and screenwriter Richard Matheson is best known for his novels "I am Legend" and "What Dreams May Come", the film adaptations of which have won a number of cinematic awards and were loved by the audience. But he also wrote many other works in the genres of fantasy, horror and science fiction.

The story "The Splendid Source", however, can be attributed to the genre of an ironic detective. It’s main character Talbert Bean once wonders: who invented obscene anecdotes? To find out the truth, he interviewed hundreds of people, made several trips across America, and even hired detectives to spy on particularly suspicious individuals, but he could not even imagine what his searches would lead to.

World of the Myth by Harlan Ellison

09 April 2025 at 18:45

You’ve probably read Harlan Jay Ellison (May 27, 1934 – June 28, 2018) before. If not, buckle up, people, you’re in for a ride. He was an American writer of, predominantly, science fiction and fantasy. His published works include more than 1,700 short stories, novellas, screenplays, etc. The recipient of multiple Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards, Ellison’s stories are daring, smart and honest. His writing is like iridescent mercury, enticing yet wounding, tearing your soul apart with its volatile blade and leaving you aching for more.

World of the Myth, is one of those stories that forces us to think about who we are for real and what we are capable of when we are faced with impossible choices, upon which the very existence of “I” is dependent.

"The Old Man" by Daphne Du Maurier

16 April 2025 at 18:45 (MSK) in Svetlovka library, Bolshaya Sadovaya st., 1 (near Mayakovskaya metro station).

Daphne du Maurier, a British novelist and playwright, is best known for her novel "Rebecca" which has been adapted for both stage and screen several times, and the short story "The Birds" that become the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s film with the same name. Du Maurier spent much of her life in Cornwall, where most of her works are set. Although she is classed as a romantic novelist, her stories have been described as "moody and resonant" with overtones of the paranormal. Her bestselling works were not at first taken seriously by critics, but have since earned an enduring reputation for narrative craft.

The main characters of the story "The Old Man" live in a ramshackle hut on the very shore of the lake – a husband, big and strong, and his placid, mild-tempered wife. They are touchingly devoted to one another. Over time, children appeared – three daughters and a clumsy, simple son. And then tragedy struck...

A classic of American literature, winner of the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes John Steinbeck, grew up in a small California town. Its main character, Jody, is an ordinary boy who prefers games and tinkering with his peers to household chores on his parents' ranch. But one day he is assigned to raise a colt, and everything changes in an instant.…
