Shopinhome.com I've received a lot of questions about COVID-19, so I am sharing my thoughts as both an epidemiologist and a parent on this pandemic: 1) COVID-19 is a big deal and this pandemic is unprecedented in our modern era. I’d call my current state to be “controlled alarm”. I don’t think you need to stock up on a 3-month supply of toilet paper, but it is wise to be vigilant about how our society may be disrupted and cautious about the spread of disease. 2) As a parent, I am not too concerned about this virus. Current data indicates that most children and young adults have minor-to-no symptoms when infected, and very few deaths have occurred in people under the age of 40. My children are healthy. If their schools close (and I think they will) we have paid sick leave, flexible salaried jobs, and access to internet, so we will make it work. The injustice is that many others do not have these privileges and may have to face significantly more burden and risk than my family. 3) I am very concerned about the medically fragile. The explosive outbreak in the Seattle nursing home (19 deaths) could happen anywhere. Based on current evidence, COVID-19 is both more contagious and significantly more severe than flu, with severe disease and death occurring primarily in those over 50. I have specific concerns about my family and neighbors who would generally be at risk for complications from any respiratory virus, and a general concern about how COVID-19 is likely to target the most vulnerable in our community. 4) “Social distancing” strategies are coming; likely to begin once there is evidence of sustained local transmission in the community. I expect this to include closing schools and cancelling crowd-drawing events, particularly in indoor spaces. Slowing the spread of a pathogen in a community will reduce the burden on healthcare. Children are likely to be primary vectors for transmission. 5) I believe this virus is here to stay. Though efforts for a vaccine are moving #corona #coronavirus #marketplace #freelancer #freelance #shopinhome
