One of the most common requests I get when building SharePoint intranets? A company-wide calendar—one that goes beyond holidays to include PTO, birthdays, payroll dates, and more, with the ability for employees to contribute.

While SharePoint’s default calendar tools are limited, a 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄 offers the flexibility clients need.

Here’s a look at one I recently built—plus a step-by-step guide to help you create your own: https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-create-a-firm-or-company-calendar-in-sharepoint-using-lists/

🎥 Wondering if you can store and manage videos in SharePoint?

Yes—you can! And with Stream (on SharePoint), it’s easier than ever to organize, share, and even embed videos across your Microsoft 365 environment.

Here’s what you need to know 👆🏻
🗂️ A client recently asked me for an interactive way to display project phases on their SharePoint site—something visual and easy to navigate for their PMO team.

They wanted to showcase each phase of the Waterfall process (Initiation, Planning, Execution, etc.), along with brief descriptions and related templates—all in one place.

I came up with a simple, clean solution using SharePoint’s built-in tools—and it worked great.

Want to see how I set it up?

Over my 15+ year SharePoint consulting career, I have helped hundreds of businesses of all sizes successfully implement SharePoint. I have seen many great implementations and many failed ones (before the clients hired me, of course 😊).

I have already written several articles documenting SharePoint implementation best practices; however, today, I would like to list what you should 𝗡𝗢𝗧 do during the implementation: https://sharepointmaven.com/5-donts-of-sharepoint-implementation/

Can you store images in SharePoint? Let me answer that for you!
📚 Did you know you can merge metadata terms in SharePoint?

If your Term Store is starting to look a little messy—maybe a few outdated terms, or duplicate entries from team changes—it might be time for a cleanup. 💡

I recently shared a quick how-to on merging terms in SharePoint’s Term Store so your metadata stays clear, consistent, and easy to manage.

A recent SharePoint project brought an interesting challenge: the client wanted users to land directly on document libraries—not site homepages—when navigating from the Intranet Hub. Changing the navigation link was easy. But what about the site logo, which always defaults to the homepage?

That’s where a simple but effective workaround came in: using a News Link page to create a redirect straight to the library. A small tweak, but it made a big difference in user experience.

Want to see how it works? https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-redirect-users-from-the-sharepoint-site-homepage-to-the-site-document-library/

What are the available views of a SharePoint List? Let me answer that for you!
If you’ve used SharePoint’s Term Store, you know how helpful it is for keeping metadata clean and consistent.

But sometimes, you do want users to add their own terms—especially for smaller, team-specific lists that don’t impact the whole organization.

The good news? There’s a way to safely open that door. I break it down in this post: https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-enable-users-to-add-new-terms-to-the-term-store/

Ever delete a file and wonder why it’s still hanging around? In this episode, I explain how the Preservation Hold Library works in SharePoint and OneDrive—and why it’s so important for compliance, retention, and protecting your data.

Need a better way to organize location info across multiple business sites?

I recently worked with a client in the fast food industry who owns 200+ restaurant locations across several states. They needed an easy, centralized way for each store to display basic info—like address, hours, manager contact, and more—within their company Intranet.

To solve it, I used SharePoint pages to create simple, organized profiles for each location:

If you’ve followed my blog, you know I’m a big fan of the SharePoint Term Store—it makes managing metadata a whole lot easier.

By default, only Admins or Term Group owners can add new terms, which helps keep things consistent. But what if you want users to contribute—say, for a local department set that doesn’t affect the whole org?

Good news: there’s a way to allow users to add metadata to the Term Store themselves. Here's how it works: https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-enable-users-to-add-new-terms-to-the-term-store/
Need to compare two versions of a policy or spot differences between Excel files?

One Copilot feature in SharePoint and OneDrive I find especially useful is the ability to compare files side by side—directly in Microsoft 365. Whether it’s spreadsheets or documents, Copilot can highlight discrepancies without the manual back-and-forth.

A simple time-saver that’s easy to overlook if you haven’t explored the newer features yet.

Hard to believe SharePoint’s been around for over 24 years—and I’ve worked with it for 17 of those. It’s come a long way, both in how it looks and how it’s built behind the scenes.

One concept from the old days that still shows up but doesn’t really apply the same way now: site collections.

If you’ve ever wondered what that means (or why it’s still there), I break it down in this post: https://sharepointmaven.com/site-vs-site-collection-in-sharepoint/
You already know SharePoint makes it easy to store and organize documents—but what about videos?

Beyond just storing them, you can actually trim videos right inside SharePoint—no fancy editing software needed for quick cuts and clean-ups.

A small feature, but super helpful when you want to keep things simple. I break it down in my latest post: https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-trim-a-video-stored-in-sharepoint/
A modern university needs more than just emails and PDFs to keep everyone connected.

This University Intranet Hub was built with SharePoint to bring together academic departments, admin offices, and student resources—all in one place.

From forms and portals to campus news and emergency updates, it’s designed to make things easier for students, faculty, and staff.

SharePoint is a great collaboration tool and content management system that organizations use worldwide.

As I consult clients and help them transition to SharePoint, nonprofits benefit significantly from migrating to SharePoint and all the other Microsoft 365 apps.

So, in this article, I would like to summarize the top 10 reasons why SharePoint makes sense for nonprofits: https://sharepointmaven.com/why-sharepoint-makes-sense-for-nonprofits/
One of the top reasons OneDrive Sync fails? No one ever trained the users.

💥 They don’t know what Sync actually does.
💥 They assume it works like a shared drive.
💥 They get confused when files don’t update or disappear.

Yes, OneDrive has quirks. But most of the sync issues I see could have been avoided with even basic training.

If you're rolling out Sync—or already dealing with the aftermath—invest in user training. It’ll save you headaches, support tickets, and a lot of frustration.
