Maruti Suzuki launched India’s first flex-fuel car the Wagon R E100 on June 5, World Environment Day. Shares rose 1.5%.
What’s a flex-fuel car?
It runs on petrol, ethanol, or any mix including 100% pure ethanol. Regular cars can only run on petrol.
Why it matters:
Ethanol is cheaper, burns cleaner, and is made locally (sugarcane/grains) reducing India’s crude oil imports.
Key details:
• Costs ₹40,000–50,000 more than standard Wagon R
• Premium expected to fall as more models adopt the tech
• Volumes will be small initially
• Maruti sees it as a meaningful segment in 5–10 years as ethanol stations expand
Launch attended by Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri.
