در کتاب ، روزگاری جنگی درگرفت ، نویسنده ، از روزی‌هایی در گذشته‌های بسیار دور، روایت می‌کند. زمانی که جنگی درگرفت. این روایت‌ها به اندازه‌ی جادوگر بدجنس و پری خوش‌طینت واقعی هستند و به اندازه هر افسانه دیگری حقیقی، آزموده شده و تصحیح شده‌اند.
_ این جنگ در چنان گذشته دوری روی داده و چنان در سایه جنگ‌های دیگر و جنگ‌هایی از انواع دیگر قرار گرفته که چه بسا کسانی که در آن شرکت کرده بودند نیز آن را از خاطر برده باشند. جنگی که از آن سخن می‌گویم بعد از جنگ سپر و کمان کرسی و آگنی کورت و درست پیش از انفجارهای کوچک آزمایشی بمب‌های اتمی هیروشیما و ناکازاکی روی داد.
جنگی که نویسنده از آن سخن می‌گوید شاید در خاطره‌ها مانده باشد زیرا آخرین جنگ در نوع خود بود. جنگ داخلی ما را آخرین”جنگ بزرگان”نامیده‌اند و به همین طریق می‌تواند جنگ جهانی دوم را آخرین جنگ جهانی فراگیر نامید. جنگ بعدی که اگر چنان ابله باشیم که اجازه وقوع آن را بدهیم، یقینا آخرین جنگ از هر نوعی خواهد بود. آن‌گاه دیگر کسی باقی نخواهد ماند که چیزی را به خاطر آورد. و اگر چنین ابله باشیم آن گاه بلحاظ بیولوژیک شایسته بقا نخواهیم بود. بسیاری از انواع گونه‌های دیگر به خاطر اشتباه‌شان در ارزیابی تغییرات از روی زمین محو شده‌اند. هیچ دلیل معقولی وجود ندارد که بتوان تصور کرد ما از قانون لایزال طبیعت مصون هستیم، قانونی که گفته می‌شود در قاموس آن فزونی سلاح، افراط در تجمل، و در اغلب موارد زیاده روی در ائتلاف نشانه‌هایی از نابودی قریب‌الوقوع است.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.
It was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), whose general lines were well known at the time. It assumes the reader knows that the war was between the government of the Second Spanish Republic, which many foreigners like Robert went to Spain to help and which was supported by the Soviet Union, and the Nationalist faction, which was supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. It was commonly viewed as the dress rehearsal for the Second World War. In 1940, the year the book was published, the United States had not yet entered the war, which had begun on Sept. 1, 1939, with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland.
The novel is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works, along with The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea.
