Methane converted into methanol at room temperature โ€“ just add light

Scientists have developed an efficient new way to convert methane into methanol at room temperature. The technique could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide a cleaner way to make key products.

While carbon dioxide gets most of the attention, itโ€™s not the only greenhouse gas changing the Earthโ€™s climate. Methane is emitted in smaller amounts but is 34 times more potent, so reducing its levels remains a priority. Excess methane from industrial processes is often burned off, but that produces CO2.

A new โ€œquantum fluteโ€ experiment by University of Chicago physicists could point the way towards new quantum technology. The holes create different wavelengths, akin to โ€˜notesโ€™ on a flute, that can be used to encode quantum information.

Described in two studies published in Physical Review Letters and Nature Physics, the breakthrough could point the way towards realizing quantum memories or new forms of error correction in quantum computers, and observing quantum phenomena that cannot be seen in nature.

Scientists hack fly brains to make them remote controlled
Researchers at Rice University have shown how they can hack the brains of fruit flies to make them remote controlled. The flies performed a specific action within a second of a command being sent to certain neurons in their brain.

The team started by genetically engineering the flies so that they expressed a certain heat-sensitive ion channel in some of their neurons. When this channel sensed heat, it would activate the neuron โ€“ in this case, that neuron caused the fly to spread its wings, which is a gesture they often use during mating.
The heat trigger came in the form of iron oxide nanoparticles injected into the insectsโ€™ brains. When a magnetic field is switched on nearby, those particles heat up, causing the neurons to fire and the fly to adopt the spread-wing pose.

To test the system, the researchers kept these engineered flies in a small enclosure atop a magnetic coil, and watched them with overhead cameras. And sure enough, when the magnetic field was switched on, the flies spread their wings within about half a second.

Planting trees and getting dividends for it? Sounds good ๐ŸŒณ

Few people are interested, but scientists predict that by 2050 humanity will face an ecological catastrophe. The raging wildfires in Australia, which have already covered more than 18 million hectares, water pollution by petroleum products - all of this is detrimental to the environment.

Woodcoin Fundation is developing a new eco-campaign called WoodLandEco. The idea is simple - they want to combine modern technology and get people involved in planting trees to protect the environment, and participants in the program will receive rewards.

How will it work?
1๏ธโƒฃ You download the app and choose the type of tree you want to plant. They each have their own properties and amount of oxygen production;
2๏ธโƒฃ You connect your tree through a special QR code and take care of it. The more oxygen your tree produces, the more dividends you get.

WoodLandEco is in the process of attracting large eco-funds to its activities, so that means that the scale of the program will be large.

๐Ÿ“ฃ The app is already in beta test and will be released to the public soon ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Want to watch the project developing and become a part of it? Then follow the WoodLandEco Telegram channel and join the community, where you can ask all the questions directly to the team.
