Researchers at MIT partnered with the Rhode Island School of Design to create a fabric that can hear. While this may seem odd or even invasive, it has remarkable implications across many fields, including medical devices. A shirt could record the heartbeat of someone with cardiac issues. Or help a person who is hard of hearing or blind better navigate the world.

The fiber is piezoelectric, meaning it creates an electric signal when bent. That includes drastic movements like pressing on the material but also tiny ones from sound waves. Piezoelectricity is used in sonars, electronic drum sets, medical imaging, and buzzers like those used on Jeopardy. The energy can even be stored and redistributed, like Black Pantherโ€™s Vibranium suit.

NASAโ€™s Perseverance Mars rover is trying to cover more distance in a single month than any rover before it โ€“ and itโ€™s doing so using artificial intelligence.
On the path ahead are sandpits, craters, and fields of sharp rocks that the rover will have to navigate around on its own. At the end of the 3-mile (5-kilometer) journey, which began March 14, 2022, Perseverance will reach an ancient river delta within Jezero Crater, where a lake existed billions of years ago.
Perseverance Mars rover will follow the proposed route to Jezero Craterโ€™s delta shown in this animation. The delta is one of the most important locations the rover will visit as it seeks signs of ancient life on Mars.

'Invisibility shield' that can hide objects by bending light.

The shield has been developed by London-based start-up 'Invisiblity Shield Co', and uses a special lens array to redirect light, rendering any objects or people hiding behind it 'invisible.'
So far, 25 fully functional shields have been developed, and the team is funding on Kickstarter to develop more.

Spiders found to extend their hearing by using webs as giant audio arrays

Spider silk carries some amazing capabilities, with its light weight, incredible elasticity and a status as one of nature's strongest materials. Scientists have made another extraordinary discovery in this area, finding that orb-weaving spiders use their webs as an array to extend their sense of hearing, a finding that could lead to advanced new forms of audio hardware.

Due to a series of solar flares, powerful auroras were observed in different parts of the Earth for almost a month.

Nasa recorded one of the largest M-class flares at the end of March.

The result is on the video from the Kola Peninsula, Russia

Slime that can be controlled by a magnetic field can navigate tight spaces and grasp objects, making it ideal for possible uses inside the body.

Li Zhang at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his colleagues mixed neodymium magnet particles with borax, a common household detergent, and polyvinyl alcohol, a kind of resin, to form a slime that can be controlled โ€ฆ

Boston Dynamicsโ€™ robot dog Spot has been tasked with a new job - patrolling the ancient ruins of Pompeii. The robot will be used to inspect the site for safety issues and record structural changes over time to better manage the historic ruins.

One specific focus for Spot will be to investigate the safety of a number of tunnels used by thieves to raid Pompeii.

Two of our biggest environmental problems are the tons of unusable plastic waste, and the tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) which are released into the atmosphere in smokestack emissions. A new process is claimed to use the former to trap the latter.

The procedure begins with plastic waste being ground into a powder, after which it's mixed with potassium acetate โ€“ that's the unique part โ€“ and then heated at 600 ยบC (1,112 ยบF) for 45 minutes. Doing so renders the plastic powder into sorbent particles filled with nanoscale pores, which are very effective at trapping airborne carbon dioxide molecules.
