Hello Everyone, How is your IV process going on?
Here is the short, sweet, and straight-to-the-point F-1 student visa process from Nepal, stripped of all the fluff.
Phase 1: The College Work
Step 1: Get Admitted
Apply to US universities and secure an admission offer. You’ll need your +2 transcripts, English proficiency scores (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE), and sometimes standard test scores like the SAT.
Step 2: Receive Your I-20 Form
Submit your financial proof (bank balance certificate + sponsor letters) to the college. They will issue your Form I-20, which lists your SEVIS ID and estimated costs. Check this document carefully for typos!
Phase 2: The Government Fees & Forms
Step 3: Pay the SEVIS (I-901) Fee
Go online to the official FMJfee website, fill in your SEVIS ID from your I-20, and pay the $350 fee using a credit card. Print out the payment confirmation receipt immediately.
Step 4: Fill Out the DS-160 Form
Complete the online Non-immigrant Visa Application (DS-160) on the CEAC website. Answer honestly, upload a standard 2x2 inch US-spec passport photo, and save your DS-160 Confirmation Page.
Step 5: Pay the Visa Fee (MRV Fee)
Create a profile on the official scheduling portal (USTravelDocs) and generate a payment slip for the $185 visa fee. Pay it at the designated bank in Nepal and save your payment receipt.
Phase 3: Booking & The Interview
Step 6: Schedule Your Interview Slots
Log back into your scheduling portal using your MRV receipt number to book your visa interview slot at the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu (Maharajgunj).
Step 7: Attend the Visa Interview
Go to the embassy with your core file. The officer will ask you direct questions about your academic intent, why you chose that specific university, how your sponsors are funding your stay, and your plans to return to Nepal.
Documents to carry: Original Passport, signed I-20, DS-160 confirmation page, SEVIS receipt, Visa fee receipt, academic transcripts, and your complete financial/property portfolio.

Phase 4: Final Departure Steps
Step 8: Passport Collection & NOC
If approved, the officer keeps your passport. Collect your stamped visa from the designated pickup point a few days later. Meanwhile, take your I-20 and apply for your No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education in Nepal so you can legally exchange and send your tuition currency abroad.
Step 9: Fly Out
Book your flight! Legally, you are allowed to enter the United States up to 30 days before the official program start date written on your I-20.
Waiver coupon available for SAT, Duolingo, Toefl, GRE, GMAT
