WHAT IS SCAC?

The SCAC stands for Standard Carrier Alpha Code — a unique two-to-four-letter code used in the United States to identify transportation companies, especially in shipping, trucking, and freight logistics.

It’s primarily used by:

Carriers to identify themselves on shipping documents, bills of lading, and EDI (electronic data interchange) communications.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to track imports and exports.

Companies working with government freight or certain large shippers (many won’t work with a carrier that doesn’t have an SCAC).

How to Get an SCAC:

The SCAC is issued by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) — not the DOT or FMCSA.
Here’s the process:

Go to NMFTA’s SCAC application page
https://nmfta.org → “SCAC Code” section.

Fill out the online application
You’ll need:

Company legal name & DBA (if applicable)

Business address

Type of business (motor carrier, freight forwarder, etc.)

Contact details

USDOT/MC number (if applicable)

Pay the fee

As of 2025, it’s around $95 USD for U.S.-based companies (varies by location & urgency).

It must be renewed annually.

Receive your SCAC

Typically issued within 1 business day after payment.

You’ll get an official confirmation letter from NMFTA.

📌Few things to note:

Hauling
freight only within a single state, without involvement in ports, customs, or major shippers, generally does not require an SCAC.

SCAC codes expire annually on June 30, no matter the original registration date.⚠️
Codes are assigned by NMFTA, though specific letters can be requested if they are available.

Motus

is the new, centralized online registration portal launched by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to modernize and secure the registration process for the U.S. trucking industry. It consolidates outdated legacy software—such as the Unified Registration System (URS) and the FMCSA Portal—into a single, mobile-friendly dashboard.
Key Purpose and Features

The system does not change existing federal laws or create new permits. Instead, it updates the underlying technology to streamline compliance and combat fraud.
Centralized Operations:

Manage USDOT applications, operating authority (MC/FF numbers), biennial updates (MCS-150), and cancellations from one account.
Fraud Prevention

: Mandates biometric and identity verification tools through Login.gov to stop bad actors and eliminate suspicious carrier records.
Real-Time Validation

: Includes built-in smart tools to check filings immediately, reducing common paperwork errors and processing delays.
Who Must Use Motus?

Every entity engaging in interstate commerce and regulated by the FMCSA will manage their records via Motus:Interstate motor carriers (truck and passenger companies)Freight brokers and freight forwardersSupporting companies (insurance providers, surety institutions, and BOC-3 process agents)
