🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s greetings on Diplomats’ Day (February 10, 2025)
💬 Colleagues,
Today, we are celebrating a professional holiday that brings together many generations of diplomats, who have devoted their lives to serving Russia.
We are paying tribute to the emerging tradition to honour our country’s diplomatic workers, which dates back to 2003, when we first marked this significant date in line with President Vladimir Putin’s decision.
🤝 First of all, I would like to express gratitude to all those who honestly perform their professional duty at the Central Office in Smolenskaya Square, territorial missions in the Russian regions, and our numerous foreign missions. Thank you for your conscientious service, self-denial, and non-indifferent attitude to what has been entrusted to you.
Russian diplomats have always been distinguished by their commitment to the ideals of patriotism and firmly safeguarded the interests of Fatherland at all times, under any social and political system, and under all circumstances.
The names of many of them have been forever entered in the glorious annals of Russian history. I am referring to Alexander Bezborodko, Alexander Gorchakov, Alexandra Kollontai, Anatoly Dobrynin, Yevgeny Primakov, Vitaly Churkin, and numerous others. We cherish their memory and honour their services. <...>
This year is special on the diplomatic calendar, being marked by the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and World War II. It has also been proclaimed the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland.
It is with a particular gratitude that we pay homage to the immortal feat of valour committed by staff members of the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs, who rose with arms in hand to the defence of Motherland during the grim years of war.
🏅 We recall the names of diplomats, our senior colleagues, who were bringing Victory closer at the foreign policy front. They made an invaluable contribution to the establishment of the anti-Hitler coalition and later to reaching fundamental agreements on the postwar international order, the most important of which were the decisions to create the United Nations and approve its Charter whose principles and goals in their totality and interconnection remain relevant to this day.
It is largely due to our country’s leaders and diplomatic service that the Yalta-Potsdam system of international relations has guaranteed global peace and security for the past eight decades.
Now that Russia is facing fateful challenges again, our priority and sacred duty is to safeguard peace based on the legal results of World War II. <...>
We will continue to do whatever is possible and necessary to protect Russia’s national interests in the context of foreign policy support for the special military operation and to create the safe and most favourable conditions for national development and wellbeing of our people.
🌐 We will continue to promote multifaceted cooperation with all sober-minded partners and primarily with the Global Majority – former republics of the USSR and countries of Greater Eurasia, Africa, and Latin America.
In collaboration with our numerous friends and opinion allies, we will help to strengthen the foundations of multipolarity, create Eurasian security architecture, and establish international interaction mechanisms impervious to the destructive influence of the Western minority. <...>
🎉 I wish you good health, wellbeing, and new attainments for the good of your Fatherland. Success and good luck to you! Congratulations once again!

🎙 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at a solemn event on the occasion of Diplomatic Worker’s Day (Moscow, February 10, 2025)
💬 Our work on carrying out the foreign policy is highly appreciated by the country’s leadership. <…> On behalf of the ministerial staff, I would like to express appreciation for your unwavering attention to our activities, proposals, and needs.
The trust in us places serious obligations on the Russian diplomatic service. Our duty is to do everything in our power to protect the interests of our country and people in the international arena. We are guided by the instructions issued by President Vladimir Putin, who sets forth our country’s foreign policy principles. We rely on many centuries of traditions of domestic diplomacy, our own knowledge, experience and common sense.
☝️ Today, just as throughout its millennial history, our country is navigating complex international processes. The combination of daunting challenges and breathtaking opportunities is a hallmark of the current phase of international development. The new is battling the old, and Russia - I think this high opinion is perfectly legitimate in these circumstances - is leading the way forward amid progressive forces advocating for international cooperation on a legal, mutually respectful and mutually beneficial basis in the best interests of common free development that is devoid of external diktat and coercion.
<…>
In no case should we freeze and hope that things will take care of themselves and everything will be like it used to be. We must look and move forward. Our active participation in the unions without “leaders” and “followers,” or “teachers” and “disciples” need to be the focus of our efforts. These unions include #BRICS, which has expanded and got stronger in the wake of Russia’s 2024 presidency, and the #SCO with its serious potential for strengthening cooperation to promote stability in Eurasia.
The voice of other associations in the CIS, Asia, Africa and Latin America that focus on integration can now be heard louder in international affairs. These associations include our natural allies and partners. <…>
❗️ Forming a broad space of peace and development in Eurasia, which is the world’s largest, resource-rich and rapidly developing continent, should remain our key area of focus. These efforts are facilitated by the objective formation of the Greater Eurasian Partnership through expanding trade and economic ties, carrying out infrastructure projects, and harmonising integration processes, primarily within the #EAEU, the #SCO, #ASEAN and China’s Belt and Road Initiative. <…>
This year marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Preserving historical memory of the Great Victory, and fighting uncompromisingly against the masterminds of neo-Nazi ideology and falsifiers of history is our sacred duty before the generation of heroes who liberated Kiev and Odessa, and Berlin and Prague. <…>
👉 The fateful changes in the international balance of power have determined the urgent need for structural and personnel reform in the ministry’s system. <…> Analyse the results of the first stage of reforms. They include an additional Department for African Partnership and a reduction of one European department. Please, submit proposals for the next stage. <…>
Ensuring the continuity of generations must remain our constant priority at historical inflexion points like the one we are having now. Passing experience from senior comrades on to young employees, who are just starting to work at the Foreign Ministry, is of particular importance.

💬 Commentary by the Russian Embassy in Malta on the article by the Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government of Malta, Owen Bonnici, “In Ukraine, Last Week” (February 7, 2025, The Malta Independent)
📰 This comment was published in The Malta Independent on February 11, 2025.
❗️ For the second time, the esteemed Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government of Malta, Mr. Owen Bonnici, has visited Ukraine, and for the second time, he returns deeply concerned about the fate of Ukrainian culture.
In a full-page article in The Malta Independent, utilizing his full range of journalistic prowess, he extensively philosophizes on the role and significance of culture in the life of a nation and society. He passionately calls upon Malta and the entire international community to defend Ukrainian culture, which he claims is allegedly on the brink of destruction – along with Ukrainian identity itself! He builds all his reasoning on this dramatic premise. He invites the reader to take everything at face value, without troubling himself to present any evidence, choosing the pathos of lofty words over the weight of actual facts. This is hardly surprising, given that his concerns are based entirely on nationalistic propaganda manuals supplied by the Kiev authorities – materials that grossly distort reality. Yet, regrettably, Mr. Bonnici accepts them without question.
For instance, he completely disregards the fact that Ukraine is not a monoethnic state and that a third of its population considers the Russian language and Russian culture their own. Mr. Bonnici is certainly right when he states that "Regional development flourishes when diverse cultures interact, exchange ideas, and grow together. The preservation and promotion of culture create a sense of belonging and social cohesion, allowing people to transcend divisions and collaborate for common goals." Yet, while eagerly applying this principle in an "interstate" context, he makes no attempt to examine its relevance to Ukraine’s internal affairs.
And yet, Ukraine is waging a total war against all things Russian. The Russian language is being banned. It has long been prohibited within government institutions, removed from kindergartens, schools, and universities. Speaking it in public spaces, in shops, and often even on the streets is forbidden. Groups of "volunteers" actively patrol the country, identifying such violations and dragging the "offenders" to the police. All Russian-language media outlets have been shut down. The Ukrainian government has divided Orthodox Christianity along ethnic lines, banning the canonical Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), expelling priests from churches, and forcing congregants to transfer to the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Monuments are being demolished, cities and streets renamed. Surely, this should be a matter of concern for those self-proclaimed defenders of freedom who never tire of extolling their commitment to 'fundamental values,' shouldn’t it?
It is, of course, disheartening to see the slogan with which the esteemed Minister chose to conclude his article. We have repeatedly pointed out that this phrase first emerged in the mid-20th century, when it was adopted by Ukrainian collaborators of Nazi Germany. Today, it is used by those in Ukraine who remain faithful to Nazi ideology. Thoughtlessly repeating all the absurdities they proclaim is, to put it mildly, unwise. Although… in this case, such saluting might actually be quite fitting, as it only reaffirms the true nature of the event’s organizers, which Mr. Owen Bonnici attended.

On the official contacts of the leadership of Russia and the USA
🇷🇺🇺🇸📞 On February 12, 2025, Russia's President Vladimir Putin and President of the United States of America Donald Trump had a telephone conversation.
The Leaders discussed issues related to the prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States. The US President assured the Russian President of the American side's commitment to fulfill all the agreements reached.
The Leaders also discussed a possible Ukraine settlement. Donald Trump spoke in favour of stopping the hostilities as soon as possible and solving the crisis peacefully. In turn, Vladimir Putin pointed out it was necessary to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and agreed with Donald Trump in that a sustainable settlement could only be reached via peaceful negotiations.
❗️ Additionally, the Russian President expressed support for one of the US President's key arguments, which was that it's time for both countries to work together.
The issues of Middle East settlement, Iran's nuclear programme, and bilateral economic relations between Russia and the United States were also brought up during the conversation.
The Russian President invited the US President to visit Moscow and expressed willingness to receive visiting officials from the United States to discuss topics of mutual interest, including a possible Ukraine settlement.
Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump agreed to maintain personal contact in the future, involving in particular in-person meetings.
🇷🇺🇺🇸📞 On February 15, 2025, at the initiative of the American Side, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Building on the February 12 telephone conversation between the Presidents of Russia and the United States, the two Foreign Ministers agreed to maintain an open channel of communication to address longstanding issues in Russian-American relations. Their goal is to remove unilateral barriers inherited from the previous US administration that have hindered mutually beneficial trade, economic and investment cooperation.
Both Sides expressed a shared commitment to engaging on key international issues, including the Ukraine settlement, developments in Palestine and the broader Middle East, as well as other regional matters.
The conversation also covered ways to swiftly reverse the restrictions on Russian diplomatic missions in the United States, which were introduced by the Obama administration in 2016 and led to reciprocal measures. It was agreed that expert-level meetings will be organised in the near future to coordinate specific steps towards removing these obstacles to the functioning of diplomatic missions in Russia and the United States.
❗️ Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio reaffirmed their readiness to restore a respectful and constructive interstate dialogue in line with the approach set by the Presidents. They agreed to maintain regular contact, including discussions on preparations for a potential high-level Russian-American summit.

🇷🇺 The Press-bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation reports that, according to the information available, European capitals have noticed with great concern that Ukraine is unwilling to make any agreements with Moscow that will involve “excessive concessions” from Kiev.
❗️ According to these sources, Kiev is considering a scenario to derail potential peace talks that involves carrying out terrorist attacks against Russia’s diplomatic offices in European countries. Ukraine will most likely focus on Germany, the Baltic states and Scandinavia.
It is a fact that cooperation between these states and Russia is currently at the lowest level in the EU, with contacts between their counterterrorism agencies all but curtailed. Or Ukraine might choose to attack Slovakia and Hungary because this promises additional benefits, namely the discreditation of these EU states that have taken “a special stance” regarding the Ukrainian conflict.
Few will now be surprised by the Kiev regime’s terrorist plans, as evidenced by the European politicians’ cynical calls for special vigilance to prevent the derailing of the settlement process of the Ukrainian crisis, which Europe has grown tired of.
Not a word of condemnation of the crimes planned in Ukraine. Not the slightest hint of concern about the potential danger to the lives of Russian diplomats.
It appears that the experience of the EU’s “war against Russia to the last Ukrainian” has taught them to accept the cannibalistic math where the loss of several hundred lives is statistically insignificant collateral damage, and terrorism is the continuation of diplomacy through other means.

🇷🇺 February 23 marks Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia.
On this day in 1918, near the villages of Bolshoe Lopatino and Maloe Lopatino not far from the city of Pskov, fighters of the 2nd Red Army Corps engaged advancing German troops moving toward Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg).
Thus, at the initiative of the Petrograd Council, February 23 was declared Red Army Day.
This day was celebrated annually across the USSR by the entire nation, yet there was no official document at the time establishing the status of February 23.
Over time, the name of the holiday changed. In the years following the Great Patriotic War, it was known as the Soviet Army and Navy Day.
📄 In 1993, a decree establishing Defender of the Fatherland Day was adopted — for the very first time, the professional holiday for the military was officially formalised and February 23 became a state holiday.
On this day, following a time-honoured practice, people pay tribute to veterans, lay flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers and participate in commemorative ceremonies. Additionally, a tradition was established to perform solemn artillery salutes on February 23.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement and answers to media questions following the G20 Ministerial Council meeting (Johannesburg, February 21, 2025)
💬 The main focus of the deliberations among the Foreign Ministers was the crucial goal of amplifying the voices of developing nations in global decision-making. The discussions were substantial, and we observed tangible progress in this regard.
Since last year, the African Union has attained full membership within the G20. The League of Arab States (#LAS) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (#CELAC) are interested in securing equivalent status. Such ambitions are commendable. We are confident that, in due course, the #EAEU may also rightfully aspire to similar standing <…>
We articulated our perspective on international challenges and their resolution during a period when multipolar realities are increasingly acknowledged. The advent of multipolarity is self-evident to us and to the #BRICS nations. Statistical evidence underscores this trend.
📈 The combined gross domestic product of BRICS states has surpassed that of the G7 countries. BRICS accounts for 37 percent of global GDP, compared to the G7’s 29 percent. This disparity heightens the urgency of reforming global economic institutions to reflect the genuine weight of the Global South and the World Majority within the world economy, alongside fostering non-discriminatory economic ties. These matters were actively deliberated. Russia stands ready to vigorously facilitate further progress in this domain, though numerous challenges persist <…>
We urged our Western counterparts to respect universally recognised rules of international law. Emphasis was placed on revitalising the United Nations’ role as a platform for coordinating state actions and forging a fair balance of interests.
The role played by BRICS certainly attracts everyone’s attention at the global level <…>
Speaking about entities that play a certain role in international economic relations, the G20 in general retains the role of a dialogue platform between the old and new centres of power. We spoke in favour of preserving the economic profile of this association <…>
South Africa, which has led the G20 this year, completes the succession of BRICS presidencies that began in 2022, when Indonesia was at the head of the G20. In 2023 it was India, and in 2024 it was Brazil. This successive version of BRICS being at the helm of the G20 has had the positive outcome of strengthening the position of the Global South in our forum.
❗️ All this contributes to the establishment of a fairer multipolar world order based on the sovereign equality of states, as required by the UN Charter, and on all other principles of the Charter in their totality and interrelation.
From answers to media questions:
🔹 The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, spoke at the G20 with the same array of accusations, proclaiming certain “plans” that would prevent Russia from taking its rightful place in the world. There is some tragicomic element to this.
🔹 The reaction of the “tragicomic figures” heading the Brussels bureaucracy and NATO to the meeting in Riyadh is highly illustrative. The mere fact that representatives of two great powers sat down, engaged in discussion, and articulated their respective positions is perceived by them as a betrayal of Western interests. These individuals are not in good health.
🔹 Multipolarity is gaining ascendancy. The growth trajectories of new, formidable centres of power – economic, political, and financial – demonstrate that this multipolarity is irreversible. In this context, the G20 retains its relevance as a forum where Western participants may come to recognise the inevitability of this process and begin adapting to it.
