⚡️ Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on US and UK illegal actions in the Red Sea
Read in full
💬 The actions taken by the United States, United Kingdom and the so-called coalition in the Red Sea are a crude violation of international law.
Speaking at the January 12 session of the UN Security Council, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya described in detail what these violations were all about.
On January 22, the UN Security Council disseminated the official document of the Russian Federation with comments on the US and UK’s failed attempts to justify armed strikes at Yemen’s territory.
❗️ Under the UN Charter, the use of force on the territory of a sovereign state (Yemen in this case) may be recognised as legal only if it is done (in the exercise of this right of self-defence) in response to the armed aggression against a sovereign state or if the use of force was sanctioned by the UN Security Council.
There is no legal basis to support the US or UK’s declared right to self-defence in the Red Sea. The goals (protection against attacks on civilian vessels and the need to ensure freedom of navigation) <...> do not give them the right to self-defence within the definition of Article 51 of the UN Charter.
<...>
☝️ There are no UN Security Council resolutions giving anyone a mandate to use force in connection with the events in the Red Sea.
<...>
These US and UK actions violate Article 2 of the UN Charter, which obliges UN members to refrain from the use of force against the territorial inviolability of any state.
<...>
The modern-day Anglo-Saxon nations have long developed a habit of violating the UN Charter and the fundamental standards of international law, including the principle of the non-use of force. This is their way of life.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine
📍 New York, January 22, 2024
Key talking points:
💬 The vast majority of unbiased experts clearly see that the West's continuing support for the Kiev regime is the key factor that is preventing a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis. Support is provided despite its obvious agony and inability to fulfil the goal of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia that was dictated to it by its higher ups, or, as they started saying recently, of at least degrading my country.
• Despite the complete failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the battlefield, the Western patrons of the Kiev regime continue to push it, like maniacs, to continue this meaningless military confrontation.
☝️ We were forced to start the military operation against a criminal regime that went too far, emboldened by impunity, and was unwilling, despite our numerous efforts over many years, to say no to the war against its own citizens in southern and southeastern Ukraine and its policy of total discrimination against Russian-speaking Ukrainians, who are still the majority in that country.
• It is surely time for Europeans – I am addressing sane Europeans – to wake up and understand that with the help of Vladimir Zelensky’s regime, the US is not only waging a war against Russia, but also pursuing the strategic objective of sharply weakening Europe as an economic rival.
• Let me remind you that we have never renounced peaceful methods and have always been ready for negotiations.
❗️ The majority of people in Ukraine are beginning to realise who their real enemy is and who has been misleading them for years by demonising Russia, spreading lies about it, and “cancelling” our shared history.

Today at 11.15 a.m., the Kiev regime carried out a terrorist act, as a result of which an aircraft of the Russian military transport aviation on a flight from Chkalovsky to Belgorod airfield to transport Ukrainian servicemen for exchange, was shot down.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine struck the aircraft from Liptsy (Kharkov region) by a missile of an air defence system.
The Russian Aerospace Forces radar means detected a launch of two missiles.
There were six crew members, 65 Ukrainian POWs on board the aircraft, which transported them for prisoners exchange, and three Russian servicemen, who accompanied the POWs. As a result, the crew and all passengers were killed.
The leadership of Ukraine was well aware that, in accordance with established practice, Ukrainian servicemen were to be transported by military transport aircraft to Belgorod airfield today for exchange.
According to an earlier agreement, the event was to take place in the afternoon at the Kolotilovka checkpoint on the Russian–Ukrainian border.
Nevertheless, the Nazi Kiev regime did that in attempt to put the blame on Russia for killing Ukrainian servicemen.
By committing this terrorist act, the Ukrainian leadership showed its true face: it disregarded the lives of its citizens.

⚡️ France has rejected Russia's request to hold a UN Security Council meeting on 24 January on the downed Il-76, instead planning to hold a meeting on 25 January.
The Russian permanent mission to the UN notes that this may be motivated by the need to buy time to cover up for Ukraine.

Message by H.E. Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy, Ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh, on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of diplomatic relations
🇷🇺🇧🇩 Meaningful interaction between our countries predates the formal establishment of diplomatic ties in January 1972 as the USSR largely supported the Bengali people during the ongoing War for Independence in 1971. Since then, over the span of more than 50 years, our bilateral history has seen many remarkable events and significant achievements.
🤝 Despite the current turbulence in international affairs, fruitful cooperation between Moscow and Dhaka has been developing across many sectors. The year of 2023 saw several milestones: the first ever visit of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Bangladesh in September, the nuclear fuel delivery ceremony at the Rooppur NPP in October; a goodwill visit of the Russian Pacific Fleet to the port of Chattogram in November. In 2023, Russia's grain export to Bangladesh amounted to 2.7 million tons.
👏 It is my earnest hope that with the newly elected government the ties between Moscow and Dhaka will continue to thrive, bringing peace and prosperity to our peoples.

🇷🇺🇧🇩 January 25 marks the 52nd Anniversary of diplomatic relations between our country and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
💬 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: Bangladesh has been our long-standing and trusted partner in South Asia. For over half a century, our bilateral relations have been based on the principles of friendship, equality, and mutual respect (news conference following talks in Dhaka, September 7, 2023).
The USSR supported the national liberation struggle of the people of Bangladesh and was among the first countries to recognise the independence of the new state.
Bangladeshis remember the feat of Soviet military sailors, who cleared the waters of the port of Chittagong from mines and sunken ships in 1972-1974.
🤝 Today, we have similar approaches toward most important foreign policy issues, and there are no contradictions and unresolved topics in our relations which are developing in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and amiability.
Russia and Bangladesh maintain a high level of political dialogue. During the working visit to Bangladesh, Russia's Sergey Lavrov held talks with his counterpart A.K.Abdul Momen and was received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
📈 Bangladesh is Russia’s major trading partner in South Asia, with trade consistently exceeding $2 billion in recent years.
Major economic projects are underway, including the construction of Rooppur, Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant. Relevant agencies are discussing practical aspects of establishing regular large-scale supplies of liquefied natural gas and oil to Bangladesh. Wheat and fertiliser shipments are being delivered.
🎉 We congratulate our colleagues and friends from Bangladesh on the common anniversary and reaffirm our willingness to continue developing mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation.

What seasonal and permanent research stations does Russia operate in Antarctica?
In January 1820, the first Russian Antarctic expedition on the ships “Vostok” and “Mirny” under the leadership of Faddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev discovered Antarctica.
Currently Russia operates 10 research stations in the South Pole: five year-round facilities and five seasonal stations.
Year-Round Stations:
🔹"Mirny" (1956), the first year-round Soviet station in the South Pole. Geological, aerologic, gravimetric and other laboratories were built there, now the station is mostly used for climatological and geophysics research.
🔹"Vostok" (1957) is located at an altitude of 3,500 meters near the south geomagnetic pole of the Earth making it possible for Russian researchers to observe changes in the Earth's magnetosphere.
🔹"Novolazorevskaya" (1961) is located at the southeastern tip of the Schirmacher oasis and on the shores of Lake Stantsionnoye, Queen Maud Land. It hosts an airfield: the runway was built in 1979 to receive Il-76 aircraft.
🔹"Bellingshausen" (1968) is the northernmost Russian Antarctic station providing capabilities for unique geological, glaciological and biological studies.
🔹"Progress" (1988) initially was a seasonal base for geological and geophysical research, while in 2012 a new wintering complex was opened in it. By November 2022, Russia had built a new airfield near the station, that allows Russian expedition staff to reach the Antarctica faster, compared to traveling by ship.

What seasonal and permanent research stations does Russia operate in Antarctica? In January 1820, the first Russian Antarctic expedition on the ships “Vostok” and “Mirny” under the leadership of Faddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev discovered Antarctica.…
Seasonal Stations:
🔸"Molodezhnaya" (1962) had long been considered the capital of Soviet Antarctica. There were about seventy buildings at the base, lined up into streets. Closed in 1999, it was switched to seasonal operations in 2006.
🔸"Leningradskaya" (1971) was used for studies of meteorology, Earth magnetism, oceanology and glaciology. It was closed in 1991, but the works at the station partially resumed after 2008.
🔸"Russkaya" (1980) was opened on March 9, 1980, and was closed in 1990. In 2008, it was reopened for seasonal research. In 2019, a decision was made to switch the station to year-round operation and work is still ongoing to make the necessary modifications.
🔸"Oasis Bangera" (1987) Soviet station was built next to the first station, founded in the Bunger Oasis in 1956. The original station was donated to Poland and renamed as Dobrovolskaya station.
🔸"Druzhnaya-4" (1987) is aimed at ensuring the logistic support to Soyuz Station and the Progress Station. The climatic conditions in the base area are favorable for seasonal work.

Key messages from Sergei Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), on US attempts to politicize sports
▪️ The US administration is deeply unnerved that their crusade to isolate Russia in high-performance sports is failing.
▪️ International sports federations are expressing their reluctance to align with the US’s position on preventing Russian athletes from participating in competitions.
▪️ Several countries in the Global South are eager to participate in Russia's Games of the Future, BRICS Sports Games, and World Friendship Games.
▪️ To maintain its dominance, the US is ramping up efforts to disrupt sports events organized in Russia.
▪️ The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is seen as crucial in this effort, with its president Witold Banka potentially seeking a lucrative position after his term with WADA ends in 2025.
▪️ Banka unleashed an aggressive campaign to discredit the competitions organized by Russia. This effort also targeted foreign athletes planning to participate in these events, which stoked fears among those athletes about their future careers in Olympic sports potentially being ruined, particularly during the upcoming Summer Games in Paris.
▪️ What's more, Banka's blatantly pro-American activities, which hamper the development of world sports, are increasing becoming an annoyance in professional circles.
