☦️ Russia's National #UnityDay: The holiday of November 4 is rooted in the immortal feat of the Second People’s Militia under the leadership of Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who saved the Motherland from mortal danger. Born in Nizhny Novgorod, this movement stirred the very fabric of history – at a moment of national peril it united the people, defended the country, and drove the Polish-Lithuanian invaders from Moscow. Learn more about those events in our detailed historical article.
The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a copy of which accompanied the Russian army throughout its liberation campaign, became a symbol of that victory. The clergy and the soldiers prayed before the image of the Kazan Mother of God, including on the eve of Moscow’s liberation from the foreign occupiers. Contemporaries saw the triumph of the militia as a clear sign of the intercession of the Mother of God.
In Orthodox tradition, the Feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated twice each year – on July 21, the day of its miraculous appearance, and on November 4, the day when the will of the people and Divine Providence saved the Motherland.
The day of Moscow’s liberation – November 4 – was established by decree of Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov as the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. At first it was marked only in Moscow, but beginning in 1649, by order of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov – throughout the entire country.
***
The story of the Kazan Icon dates back to 1579. According to tradition, after a great fire destroyed part of Kazan, the Mother of God appeared three times in a dream to a nine-year-old girl named Matrona, showing her the place under the ashes where Her image lay hidden. The miraculous discovery of the icon deeply moved the townspeople and was perceived as a sign of the special protection of the Most Holy Theotokos over the Russian land.
Soon afterward, the Theotokos Monastery was built on the site of the discovery, with the icon enshrined at its centre. From that time, copies of the image began to spread across Russia and beyond, bringing comfort and hope to believers. The Kazan Icon was carried into battle, used to bless new churches, and strengthened the people’s faith during the most difficult trials.
In 2023, on the Feast of the Kazan Icon, at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Dormition in the Moscow Kremlin, the very holy image before which Minin and Pozharsky prayed during the decisive battles for Moscow was rediscovered and publicly revealed to the faithful.
💬 According to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, a thorough expert study confirmed the authenticity and antiquity of the icon, dated to the late 16th century:
Today, the Feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated on November 4, together with Russia’s National Unity Day, reminding us of the enduring link between spiritual and national heroism, faith and love for the Motherland.

We know that before this image Prince Pozharsky prayed prior to launching his assault on the Kremlin. We also know that he prayed before it when preparing to attack the Novodevichy Convent, which at that time had been turned into a Polish fortress.
In other words, he prayed before this icon every time he entered a decisive battle with the Polish invaders. And we know that these prayers were heard. The Queen of Heaven spread Her protecting veil, the Russian land was liberated, and in memory of this great event Prince Pozharsky built at his own expense a church on the Red Square dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. <…>
Thanks to careful scholarly examination, it has been established that this is the very image carried by Minin and Pozharsky when they liberated Kitay-Gorod and the Kremlin, driving the Poles from our Motherland. In other words, we stand before a historic shrine – one of the most sacred treasures of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Today, the Feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated on November 4, together with Russia’s National Unity Day, reminding us of the enduring link between spiritual and national heroism, faith and love for the Motherland.

🎙️ Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with Russian media outlets (Moscow, November 11, 2025)
Read in full
❓ Question: Moscow and Washington have almost simultaneously announced nuclear test plans. Does this signify global instability or rather demonstrate equal capabilities and thus the preservation of parity?
💬 Sergey Lavrov: I have heard nothing about Moscow announcing nuclear tests, so it is inaccurate to say that Washington and Moscow made such statements simultaneously.
As I mentioned in a recent interview with Russian media outlets, we have so far not received clarifications from our US counterparts as to what exactly President Donald Trump meant to convey in his remarks. Was it nuclear tests, delivery vehicle tests, or subcritical tests which do not involve a nuclear reaction and are permitted under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)?
There has been no answer to that so far.
The CTBT Preparatory Commission met yesterday, but a US representative failed to provide any clarifications, either, although such a forum is clearly the right place to clarify what the US President had in mind when he said that. <…>
What may the geopolitical goal of the United States look like? 👉 Domination, right? The use of nuclear weapons argument in this setting is alarming and represents a significant departure from the concept once agreed upon by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev where a nuclear war cannot be won and therefore must never be fought.
Robert Kadlec seeking the position of Assistant Secretary of Defence also stated that nuclear options should be developed to respond to certain regional conflicts that may flare up. That, too, is a rather curious statement. It’s a direct tell that this gentleman, once in office, will be thinking in terms of using nuclear threats in order to achieve the outcomes that the United States may need in a particular region.
He then went on to demonstrate even more instances of double standards when he said that NATO’s nuclear deterrence strategy might be revised in the wake of Russia deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Yet, the fact that this was done after many decades of joint nuclear missions with US tactical nuclear weapons long stationed in five NATO member states and the fact that we have long proposed to redeploy all nuclear weapons back to the countries that own them was simply ignored.
Since Belarus has received nuclear weapons from Russia, the US side now wants to deploy theirs somewhere else as well. We are aware of ongoing contacts with South Korea and Japan. These games are very dangerous.
Back to your question, we have not announced nuclear test plans. At a meeting of the Security Council’s permanent members, President Vladimir Putin highlighted US President Donald Trump’s statement that Russia and China have long been doing this, and therefore the United States must do so, too. We immediately contacted our counterparts and let them know that there must have been a misunderstanding. We are looking forward to receiving clarifications.
President Putin has issued a directive not to conduct nuclear tests and not even to make preparations for them. The Foreign Ministry, along with other agencies, including military and intelligence, has been instructed to analyse the situation and to reach a consensus on whether this situation warrants considering the resumption of nuclear tests.
Our principled position was laid out by President Putin in 2023, when, taking a question during one of his speeches, he said that if a nuclear power were to conduct nuclear weapons test (not delivery system tests, not subcritical tests), then Russia will respond in kind. <…>

In recent months, we have recorded a surge of fake stories about Russia (on top of an already large number) in the Italian media.
To somehow stop this flow of lies, we offered one of Italy’s leading newspapers, Corriere della Sera, an exclusive interview with Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.
The editorial office of the newspaper agreed with enthusiasm. They sent us a list of detailed questions for the interview. The Minister provided comprehensive answers to each of them. The text was promptly finalised and made ready for publication.
However, the newspaper refused to publish Lavrov’s answers to its own questions.
We were “told” that the Minister’s words “contain many controversial statements requiring fact-checking or further clarifications, which would result in exceeding reasonable length limits”. When we suggested publishing an abridged version in the newspaper and the full interview on its website, the editors... refused.
We consider this an outrageous act of censorship.
We believe that Italian citizens, as guaranteed by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, have the right to access information.
We are publishing both versions of the interview – the full one and the version edited / censored by Corriere della Sera.
All passages deemed inconvenient for the Italian authorities were deliberately removed by the editors.
👉 This case vividly illustrates how Italian citizens are denied objective information about the situation around Ukraine and are deliberately misled.
