The Greatest Joy of a Parent Is to See Their Children Obedient to Allah

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Badr (may Allah preserve him and grant him success) said:

“Children are a tremendous blessing, and they are an adornment of the life of this world, as Allah, the Exalted, said:

﴿ الْمَالُ وَالْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ﴾
‘Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world.’
Sūrah al-Kahf, 18:46

And they are a comfort to the eyes of their parents if they obey Allah.

Among the supplications of the servants of al-Raḥmān is:

﴿ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ ﴾
‘Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring the comfort of our eyes.’
Sūrah al-Furqān, 25:74

Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (may Allah have mercy upon him) was asked about this verse, and he said:

‘That Allah allows the Muslim servant to see obedience to Allah from his wife, his brother, and his close companion. By Allah, there is nothing more comforting to the eye of a Muslim than seeing a child, a grandchild, a brother, or a close companion being obedient to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.’”

Sūrah al-Fātiḥah Is Among the Greatest Means of Healing

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

“The entire Qurʾān is a healing, and al-Fātiḥah is the greatest sūrah within it. It possesses a special quality of healing that other sūrahs do not possess.

Those endowed with knowledge and insight have continued to treat their ailments with it, and they have witnessed its effect in bringing recovery and healing swiftly.

However, there is an important point here that one must pay close attention to:

Ruqyah and protective supplications are like a weapon, and the effect of a weapon depends upon the strength of the one wielding it and upon the target being receptive to its effect.

The effectiveness of a weapon lies in the one who strikes with it, not merely in the sharpness of its blade.

So whenever the weapon itself is complete and free from defect, the arm wielding it is strong, and the object struck is receptive to being cut, then the cut will inevitably take effect.

But whenever any one of these three matters is absent, its effect will likewise be absent.”

The Home Is the First School, and the Mother Is the Foundation of Religious Upbringing

Imām ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bādīs (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

“The home is the first school and the original place in which men are formed.

The religious commitment of the mother is the foundation for preserving religion and good character.

Most of the weakness we find in our men with regard to these two matters stems from the absence of Islamic upbringing within the homes, due to the ignorance of mothers and the weakness of their religious commitment.”

What Is the Ruling on Using Pills to Prevent Menstruation for Prayer, Fasting, and Ḥajj, and What Is the Ruling on Her Fasting?

Question: What is the ruling on using pills to prevent menstruation for the sake of prayer, fasting, and Ḥajj? And what is the ruling on her fasting?

The Imām and Muḥaddith, Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (may Allah have mercy upon him), answered:

It is better for the woman to remain upon her natural state upon which Allah, Glorified and Exalted, created her. And Allah knows best the interests of His servants.

The Prophet ﷺ said to ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her):

“Do what the pilgrim does, except that you should not circumambulate the House.”

And Allah, Glorified and Exalted, is able to inspire His Prophet ﷺ with a treatment that would prevent menstruation.

And he also said regarding Ṣafiyyah:

“May she be barren and shaven-headed! Is she going to detain us?”

He feared that she would delay them from returning to Madīnah until she became pure. So it was said: “O Messenger of Allah, she has already performed ṭawāf.” He said:

“Then depart.”

So the woman should remain, with regard to prayer, Ḥajj, fasting, and other than that, upon the natural condition upon which Allah created her.

And perhaps she may be harmed by it. Menstruation relieves her. Perhaps with some women the menstruation becomes retained, causing disturbances and distress. So it is regarded as a blessing from Allah, Glorified and Exalted.

The Forgiven Thoughts Are Those That Do Not Nullify Faith

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed, Allah has pardoned my Ummah for what they whisper to themselves, so long as they do not speak of it or act upon it.”

The pardoning of what occurs within the soul applies specifically to the Ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ—those who believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day.

Thus, it is known that this pardon concerns matters that do not undermine īmān.

As for that which contradicts īmān, then the wording of the ḥadīth does not encompass it, because if it contradicts īmān, then its possessor is not, in reality, from the Ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ in the true sense. Rather, he would be in the position of the hypocrites.

Therefore, it is not necessary that he be pardoned for what is within himself of speech or action.

This is a clear distinction indicated by the ḥadīth, and through it the evidences of the Sharīʿah are reconciled.”

Your Life Is Precious and Every Breath Is Counted

Imām Muwaffaq al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Saffārīnī (may Allah have mercy upon him) said in his advice:

“Seize, may Allah have mercy upon you, your precious life, and guard your valuable time.

Know that the duration of your life is limited and your breaths are counted. With every breath, a part of you diminishes.

Your entire lifespan is short, and what remains of it is even less.

Every portion of it is a precious jewel for which there is no equal and no replacement.

For through this brief life comes eternal existence—either in everlasting bliss or in painful punishment.”

Calling to Allah Is a Form of Jihād in His Cause

The eminent scholar Zayd ibn Muḥammad ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

“It is important to know that calling to Allah—through delivering sermons, writing, giving guidance, teaching, enjoining what is good, and forbidding what is evil—is a form of jihād in the cause of Allah.

So whoever misses out on the battles of fighting and guarding the frontiers should strive through calling to Allah, so that the Sharīʿah of Allah may govern throughout the earth of Allah, and so that the people may be given understanding of the religion of Allah.

So glad tidings, then glad tidings, to the one who strives in the cause of Allah, calls to Allah, performs righteous deeds, and says:

‘Indeed, I am from the Muslims.’”

True Patience Is Patience Within the Heart

Imām ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

“A person may become distressed while outwardly displaying firmness and endurance, yet his heart is filled with anguish and displeasure toward the decree of Allah.

He may say: ‘O my Lord, why did You do this to me?!’

So between himself and his Lord, he is distressed, even if he outwardly displays composure before the people. Within his heart, however, he remains afflicted with anguish.

As for the believer, he is patient within his heart. His chest is open, his heart is tranquil, he is pleased with Allah and seeks the reward from Him.

He knows that his Lord, Glorified and Exalted, possesses perfect and far-reaching wisdom in everything that He decrees.”

May a Menstruating or Postnatal Woman Touch and Read the Qurʾān and Attend Lessons in the Mosque?

Question: Is it permissible for a menstruating woman and a woman experiencing postnatal bleeding to touch the Qurʾān and read from it, especially during the blessed month of Ramaḍān, which people specifically devote to completing the Qurʾān? And is it permissible for her to attend gatherings of knowledge and lessons in the mosque?

The Imām and Muḥaddith, Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (may Allah have mercy upon him), answered:

I do not know of anything preventing this.

As for the ḥadīth:

“None should touch the Qurʾān except one who is pure.”

Then among the scholars are those who say that it is mursal. And even assuming that, through the totality of its routes, it is suitable as evidence, then it is to be understood in accordance with what al-Shawkānī said in Nayl al-Awṭār. He said regarding:

“None should touch the Qurʾān except one who is pure,”

meaning: a Muslim. So a disbeliever should not touch it, because the Prophet ﷺ prohibited travelling with the Qurʾān to the land of the enemy.

This is one matter.

There remains the statement of Allah, the Exalted:

﴿لَا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ﴾
“None touch it except the purified.”

[Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah: 79]

What is intended is that none touch it except the purified, meaning the angels, as Imām Mālik said in his Muwaṭṭaʾ. He said: This verse is explained by the statement of Allah, the Exalted:

﴿كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ۝ فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ ۝ فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ۝ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ۝ بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ ۝ كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ﴾
“Nay! Indeed, it is a reminder. So whoever wills may remember it. In honoured sheets, exalted and purified, in the hands of scribes, noble and righteous.”

[Sūrah ʿAbasa: 11–16]

Meaning: the angels.

So its meaning is that none touch it except the angels, just as our Lord, Majestic and Exalted, said:

﴿وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ ۝ وَمَا يَنبَغِي لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ ۝ إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ السَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ﴾
“And it is not the devils who have brought it down. Neither would it befit them, nor are they able. Indeed, they are removed far from hearing.”

[Sūrah al-Shuʿarāʾ: 210–212]

Likewise, it is permissible for her to attend gatherings of knowledge and lessons in the mosque, and there is no harm in that, if Allah wills.

As for the ḥadīth:

“I do not permit the mosque for a menstruating woman nor for one in a state of janābah (major ritual impurity).”

Then it is a weak ḥadīth.

Also, the Prophet ﷺ said to ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her):

“Indeed, your menstruation is not in your hand.”

And he said to her:

“Do what the pilgrim does, except that you should not circumambulate the House.”

Therefore, there is no harm, if Allah wills, in her attending lessons of knowledge in the mosque.

And Allah is the One whose aid is sought.
