Iodine-131

๐Ÿ”ฌIodine-131 is the most popular isotope in the treatment of thyroid diseases. Radioactive iodine is capable of fully recovering even patients with metastases.

๐Ÿ’ŠIodine-131 is available as tablets or in a liquid form. The cells of the thyroid gland absorb the radiopharmaceutical once it is in the body. Ionizing radiation gradually destroys cancer cells in the thyroid gland, as well as those cells that may have spread to other parts of the body.

Global HackAtom goes on: national round in Kyrgyzstan ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

National round of Global HackAtom in Kyrgyzstan was held from May 13 to 14. The event took place at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU).

How did the championship go?
13 teams from 5 Kyrgyz universities were working on case studies in nuclear medicine๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ. On May 13, the participants attended the lectures on the current state of medical physics and the outlooks for nuclear medicine. On May 14, the teams defended their projects before an expert jury.

๐Ÿ†Who won?
The team โ€œHot Spotโ€ from Kyrgyz State Medical Academy became the winner. They will represent Kyrgyzstan in the finals in September 2026 during the International Festival of Youth.

๐Ÿ“Moreover, Tomsk Polytechnic University and KRSU signed an agreement on launching a cooperative educational program โ€œMedical Physicsโ€. The cooperation of two universities will ensure the influx of young specialists to the developing sector of nuclear medicine in Kyrgyzstan.

๐Ÿ”ฌRosatomโ€™s new isotope development

The development and production of medical isotope products is one of Rosatomโ€™s strategic goals. The grow up of this industry helps to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and to ensure the development of the healthcare system not only in Russia, but also in other countries ๐ŸŒ

Rosatom is working to expand its range of radiopharmaceuticals (RPs) running one of the most important healthcare projects โ€” the construction of Europe's largest plant for GMP production of radiopharmaceuticals. The plant will make it possible to expand the product range to 25 types of radiopharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients by 2025.

The list of promising isotopes for the creation of radiopharmaceuticals includes:
๐Ÿ”นradium chloride (Ra-223) โ€” for the treatment of the prostate gland, breast and ovaries cancers;
๐Ÿ”ธMIBG (I-131) โ€” for the treatment of neuroblastoma in children;
๐Ÿ”นrhenium -188 โ€” for the treatment of liver cancer and others.

๐Ÿ“ฃThe second stage of the "Icebreaker of Knowledge" competition has started!

After completing the quiz, the participants are in for a series of webinars on Rosatom's cutting-edge technologies, including those for the development of safe navigation in the Arctic.

๐ŸงŠFor example, did you know that a nuclear icebreaker doesn't simply break ice, but rather navigates through it by "pushing" its bow against the surface? The ice obstacle breaks up under the icebreaker's weight, and the ice chunks drift apart. This creates a channel for the icebreaker and the vessel following it.

The webinars should be studied very carefully โ€” after watching them the participants will need to complete the tasks.

The participants with the highest scores in stages 1 and 2, will advance to the finals. The final task will be to prepare video for the expert jury.

๐Ÿ“Donโ€™t miss your chance to learn more during the expedition on the nuclear icebreaker! Visit our website to take part in the competition.

โš›The first RITM-200 reactor for the nuclear icebreaker Leningrad is ready!

Rosatom's Machine-Building Division has completed the control assembly of one of the two reactor plants that will power the sixth serial nuclear universal icebreaker Leningrad of Project 22220.

The RITM-200 is the newest marine nuclear reactor plant. It opens up new opportunities for the development of navigation along the Northern Sea Route.

The RITM-200 reactor plants are installed on the nuclear icebreakers Arktika, Sibir, Ural, and Yakutia. They have been operating on the NSR for several years, regularly navigating ships along the arctic route. The nuclear-powered icebreaker Chukotka, currently under construction, is already equipped with two RITM-200 reactors.

Due to the RITM-200, nuclear icebreakers can break ice up to 3 meters thick and operate for up to 7 years without refueling. In addition, RITM-200 reactor units can be used to supply energy to land-based small modular reactor power plants and floating power units.

We continue exploring nuclear technologies, now in a new series "True or False?". We'll share facts from different areas of the nuclear industry, and your task is to guess whether the fact is true or false. The answer hides behind the dots below the statement. Let's give it a try!

Akkuyu โ€“ Tรผrkiye's First Nuclear Power Plant

TRUE

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ทThe Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant construction site is located in the southern province of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast. The project includes four power units with Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors. Their combined installed capacity will be 4,800 MW, and the NPP will provide up to 10 % of the state's energy. The annual planned electricity production will be enough to supply a large city with a population of about 15 million people, such as Istanbul.

Tens of thousands specialists work at the NPP construction site of daily, 80% of them are Turkish citizens. At the height of the construction, more than 30,000 constructors and engineers were involved.

Rosatom has successfully completed the remediation of 5 uranium sites in Kyrgyzstan

What did the works include?
During 9 years in the Kyrgyzstan, five facilities in residential communities of Min-Kush in Naryn region and Kakhi-Sai in Issyk-Kul region have been brought into a radiation-safe state as part of the program. More than 27 hectares of land have been reclaimed, and the volume of transported tailings has exceeded 1.4 million cubic meters. The key achievement of the program in terms of  technical process in the Kyrgyz Republic was the completion of the most complex works in the village of Min-Kush in Naryn region.

What marked the end of the work?
The landmark  was the opening of a memorial stele in Min-Kush village. The monument symbolizes respect for the history of the country mining industry and the contribution of the Kyrgyz people to the "atomic project" of the USSR, as well as serving as a testament to the strong strategic partnership between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation.
