In-depth on Talgo Avril: the innovative high-speed EMU finally entered service in Spain

The first ten AVE trains have commenced operation between Madrid and Galicia and Asturias. These are the world’s first variable gauge trains with a maximum speed of 330 km/h. The prototype was unveiled in 2012, and the delivery was delayed by more than three years.

A further five 1,435 mm trains will be introduced between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Murcia as a part of Avlo low-cost service.

In 2016–2017, Renfe, the Spanish national operator, placed an order for 30 trains. Half of these are 1,435 mm only, while the remainder are 1,435/1,668 mm variable gauge.

Green traction to raise doubts for US railway business

The Wall Street Journal has a great article on the prospects and limitations of alternative traction for diesel locomotives.

US rail operators are under regulatory pressure, according to the media reports. Last year, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allowed states to impose more stringent controls on diesel locomotives, and California has gone further by banning diesel vehicles after 2035. These decisions follow the US National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonisation. A WSJ reporter discussed widely known diesel alternatives – batteries, biofuel, and hydrogen – with market players, including BNSF, Union Pacific and AAR.

Deploying virtual coupling: developer’s view

New Yermak electric locomotives manufactured by TMH’s plant in Novocherkassk all come equipped with the ISAVPRT-M smart system, a 2021 feature that uses virtual coupling for driving freight trains. Now the Russian railway network can’t do without it, as it boosts the throughput capacity of main lines.

With virtual coupling, two or more freight trains can travel as close to each other as possible. 35,863 train pairs enjoyed virtual coupling in 2023. TMH integrated the ISAVP-RT-M systems into over 1,500 3ES5K locomotives at the Baikal–Amur Mainline and Trans-Siberian Railway and counting.

In the world of high speeds. All-in-one overview of modern trains

Sixty years ago, Japan launched the first EMU with a design speed of 210 km/h, which was developed and built by the entire country. This marked the advent of high-speed rail transport.

In the current context, trains with a lower speed limit of 250 km/h are considered high-speed. This mode of transport has established itself as a viable option for destinations where speed is a priority, travel demand is significant, and the distance is not so great that passengers would choose a plane.

Efforts to increase train speeds continue unabated, with new countries, such as Russia, joining the exclusive club of manufacturers.
