--You released your first original album in eight years, "Meanwhile," in October last year. It includes songs that you released as singles after the COVID-19 pandemic, but overall it has a laid-back, organic sound.

　"It's a rebellious album. That's because at that time, the city was locked down and people's freedom was restricted, such as 'Don't go out.' All artists were unable to hold concerts and had to throw away two years of work. But music has an important power to heal society. Music transcends language barriers and gives people salvation. So when I was told 'You can't play music' during the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought 'That's wrong,' and decided to make this album from home. First, I recorded the guitar, sent it to my collaborator in Los Angeles to add the sound, and then sent it to another place to add the drums. That's how I created it. Frankly, there were some parts that were rough or not polished, but I still wanted to do it. Some songs express doubts about the measures taken against the pandemic. For example, 'Pompous Fool' is about a certain politician."

--You invested your own money in establishing the Crossroads Center, a treatment facility for alcohol and drug addiction, and have led its operation for nearly 30 years. What do you think is the significance of such activities?

I believe that my experience overcoming my alcohol addiction can help someone. That's one of the reasons why I wasn't in favor of lockdowns. A lot of people stayed at home and turned to alcohol. A lot of people lost their lives, and I think some took their own lives. There was a lot of mental health issues too. That's why I'm determined to keep the Crossroads Centre going, and I think it's the most important thing to me."
