"Despite the existence of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil cartel since 1960, the United States continues to shape the terms on which much of the world’s petroleum is shipped, priced, and paid for through its monopoly on violence — by securing key chokepoints and client states with its bases and fleets and by using sanctions to make oil sales involving targeted states or firms harder to insure, finance, transport and settle financially.

Coups and wars also serve to discipline states that seek too much control over their own resources or wish to move outside this dollar-centred order.

Inflation — a sustained increase in prices over a period of time — is the enemy of financial wealth, as it depreciates the purchasing power of financial assets.

Since the world economy is dependent on energy derived from oil, a rise in oil prices leads to a rise in the price of all other commodities and the overall cost of production and transport, lowering the value of bonds and other financial assets that depend on low inflation.

Holders of financial wealth therefore tend to favour policies that curb inflation through austerity, restrictive fiscal policy, and by keeping the prices of oil — and therefore costs of production, including wages – down. The wealthy prefer holding assets that are stable relative to the prices of commodities and wages, which is why the U.S. dollar has been their currency of preference for holding wealth and denominating major debts and contracts.

By offshoring production to poorer countries, the U.S. has kept wage levels and inflation low at home and maintained the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar. Although there have been moments of crisis, no other currency has come close to replacing the primacy of the U.S. dollar, since no other state combines the military reach, sanctions power, alliance networks, and financial depth required to command the pricing of key commodities like oil.

If Washington can no longer guarantee the terms under which that oil moves and, worse, if more of the proceeds are going to be held in non-dollar currencies (such as the Chinese yuan, which is the currency of settlement that Iran prefers), this will provoke great turbulence in the dollar-denominated bond market which is the heart of the global financial system."

Iran refutes Trumps claims on Strait of Hormuz

"The US president made seven claims in the span of one hour, all seven of which are false."

Earlier, Trump had taken to his Truth Social platform, alleging that Iran had "agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again." He had also claimed that the United States' "naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete." Trump had additionally said that ceasefire negotiations "should go very quickly in that most of the points are already negotiated."

Qalibaf, however, asserted that "if the blockade continues, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open."

He also underlined, "Passage through the Strait of Hormuz will take place based on a 'designated route' and with 'Iran’s authorization.'"

We could not care less. We want our Parks back!

If London's @theroyalparks need to stay closed on sunny week-ends because of the Israeli Embassy (right across from Kensington Palace btw, what are the chances?) then we would all rather the Israeli Embassy was asked to relocate AWAY from London Parks, perhaps on an island moat like the US Embassy.

'In Iran and Ukraine, what is at stake — what is fought for and against — is a rebalancing of power that will prove of world-historical magnitude when it is at last accomplished.'

"First came news that, on April 8, Israeli jets bombed what is known as the China–Iran railway, a key component of Beijing’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. Of all the targets the Zionist terror machine might have hit, why a Chinese-sponsored infrastructure project, you had to wonder.

Then on Wednesday came reports that officials from nearly 50 nations — I would love a list of these 50 — met in Berlin to make sure the fires of war against Russia do not flicker out. “We cannot lose sight of Ukraine,” Mark Rutte, NATO’s new secretary-general, declared a little forlornly.

There are other reports such as these of late. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, announced Thursday that the Pentagon has authorized the Pacific Fleet to interdict ships in the Indian and Pacific oceans if they are deemed to be carrying Iranian oil to Asian ports or “material support” from Asia — read China — to the Islamic Republic.

It is time for a stock-take.

The war in Ukraine drones (literally) on and on, the West showing no inclination whatsoever to take the Russian position seriously. In West Asia we find a variant: The United States and the rabid dog that Bibi Netanyahu has made of Israel have no intention of considering the 10–point document wherein Iran states its conditions for ending a war it appears perfectly willing to continue waging.

What are we looking at? What animates these two confrontations such that to understand our moment we must see Ukraine and Iran as two theaters of a single war?

I do not care for self-referencing commentators, but an exception to my rule is the swiftest way to my reply to these questions.

I have argued since the turn of the millennium that parity between the West and the non–West is the foundational imperative of the 21st century. Any given nation or bloc may favor or oppose this eventuality, but there will be no stopping the turn of history’s wheel: This was my take at the opening of the era that announced itself with the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

And it is the painful birth of this new time we witness as the wars in Europe and West Asia grind on. In each case what is at stake, what is fought for and against, is a rebalancing of power that will prove of world-historical magnitude when it is at last accomplished.

Are the Western powers aware of the magnitude of the moment? I do not see how this can be anything other than so. Setting aside the Zionists’ obsessions and the visceral hatred Ukraine’s neo–Nazi regime nurses toward Russia and Russians, these conflicts are, when viewed broadly, about the defense of Western hegemony in its declining years.

This is how I read that attack on the China–Iran railway. O.K., the Israelis did the wet work, as they say, but the bombing of a significant Chinese asset was not without intent: It reflects the United States’ mounting anxiety as the non–West’s premier power advances an imaginative global agenda that has the policy cliques in Washington, now that they belatedly recognize its significance, quaking.

To date, Beijing has reportedly spent 40 billion yuan, about $6 billion, on the project. This is part of the $400 billion investment agreement Beijing and Tehran signed in June 2020."
