You may be surprised to learn this. If you carefully read the Bible and look at God's requirements to enter heaven, you realize there is: 1) NO requirement to attend a physical church. 2) NO actual requirement to read or memorize the Bible. 3) NO actual requirement to accept Jesus as your savior (seriously). Rather, the requirements are to be a good person and to not be an evil person, and God's angels provide the detailed list of what makes you evil: Cowardice, lying, murder, idolatry, sexual immorality, practicing "magic arts," failing to believe in God and so on (Revelation 21:8 among other passages). Notably, people of good faith and character of course were welcomed into heaven long before the birth of Christ. Noah, for example. And the entire Jewish tradition of Judaism does not recognize Christ at all (although Islam does recognize Christ as a prophet). Furthermore, the "church" in the days of Christ wasn't always a single place with a building, but rather it was often a roving, mobile gathering from place to place, what we could call today a "pin drop church" because it wasn't tied to a specific building or location. Although there were temples for specific gatherings, the very idea of "the church" was more about community and taking the teachings from town to town, wherever people needed to be met in their regular lives, to teach them the Word. Of course, reading the Bible can be incredibly useful in understanding God's teachings and demands, and reading the words of Christ is especially helpful (get a red letter Bible), but given that for most of known human history, MOST CHRISTIANS WERE ILLITERATE and could not read, there was never any strict requirement to be able to read in order to enter heaven. Only the highly-educated scribes, priests, academics and high officials could actually read, yet the illiterate were readily welcomed into heaven as long as they qualified in their deeds, faith and behavior. Fascinating, isn't it? Your pastor probably never told you any of this. I wonder why?
