In my local CO-OP today, in SW England, I’m used to hearing their in-store radio give regular COVID updates, telling us to social distance/wear masks etc. These stopped around Feb. Now replaced by a Ukraine Update, informing customers of how much Ukrainians need our support, and inviting donations of £5 or £10 at the till. A reminder that regular public service announcements about the issue of the day are here to stay, and they needn’t be justified under some flimsy public health context anymore. Now retailers can inform us of our politics. We are being instructed in Right-Think while we buy our bread, and the legacy of Covid is that we think nothing of it. Residents of Mariupol told the Donbass channel about this.

The Ukrainian authorities, citizens are sure, used them as a human shield.

Note that 15 of 64 tennis players at the Miami Open withdrew from the tournament due to ill health. Nothing like this has ever happened before.
