Protective immunity after recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection – Lancet

"Multiple epidemiological and clinical studies, including studies during the recent period of predominantly delta (B.1.617.2) variant transmission, found that the risk of repeat SARS-CoV-2 infection decreased by 80·5–100% among those who had had COVID-19 previously (panel). The reported studies were large and conducted throughout the world. Another laboratory-based study that analysed the test results of 9119 people with previous COVID-19 from Dec 1, 2019, to Nov 13, 2020, found that only 0·7% became reinfected.

 In a study conducted at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, USA, those who had not previously been infected had a COVID-19 incidence rate of 4·3 per 100 people, whereas those who had previously been infected had a COVID-19 incidence rate of 0 per 100 people.

 Furthermore, a study conducted in Austria found that the frequency of hospitalisation due to a repeated infection was five per 14 840 (0·03%) people and the frequency of death due to a repeated infection was one per 14 840 (0·01%) people.

One study found that previous COVID-19 was associated with increased adverse events following vaccination with the Comirnaty BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine (Pfizer–BioNTech).

In addition, there are rare [LIARS] reports of serious adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination.

Given the evidence of immunity from previous SARS-CoV-2 infection, however, policy makers should consider recovery from previous SARS-CoV-2 infection equal to immunity from vaccination for purposes related to entry to public events, businesses, and the workplace, or travel requirements."

“People over 65 could be barred from going to cafés, restaurants and on long-distance trains if they fail to get coronavirus booster jabs, the health secretary has suggested.

Sajid Javid said that he could not rule out following France’s plans for health passes for over-65s. They will be required to show that they have had a booster as evidence they have been fully vaccinated, or a recent negative test.”

‘Tens of thousands’ of NHS and care home staff could quit over Covid jabs

Fears voiced over exodus of personnel as Sajid Javid confirms NHS England workers will have to be fully jabbed by April

Thirty-two thousand care home staff and tens of thousands of NHS personnel could quit over the government’s insistence that both workforces get vaccinated against Covid, it is feared.

The warning came as Sajid Javid confirmed that health service workers in England will have to be fully jabbed by next April or risk being sacked. The move will bring the NHS into line with the care home sector, in which staff have until Thursday to prove that they have had two doses.

The health secretary appeared to disclose to MPs when making the announcement about the NHS that, with Thursday’s deadline for care home staff imminent, as many as 32,000 of them have still not yet been jabbed"

Abstract:

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS–CoV–2) has led to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID–19) pandemic, severely affecting public health and the global economy. Adaptive immunity plays a crucial role in fighting against SARS–CoV–2 infection and directly influences the clinical outcomes of patients.

Clinical studies have indicated that patients with severe COVID–19 exhibit delayed and weak adaptive immune responses; however, the mechanism by which SARS–CoV–2 impedes adaptive immunity remains unclear. Here, by using an in vitro cell line, we report that the SARS–CoV–2 spike protein significantly inhibits DNA damage repair, which is required for effective V(D)J recombination in adaptive immunity.

Mechanistically, we found that the spike protein localizes in the nucleus and inhibits DNA damage repair by impeding key DNA repair protein BRCA1 and 53BP1 recruitment to the damage site. Our findings reveal a potential molecular mechanism by which the spike protein might impede adaptive immunity and underscore the potential side effects of full-length spike-based vaccines
