If the wages of sin are death, then it logically follows that anyone who lives in a state of unabated, unrepentant, long-term sin is committing a form of suicide.

Except (and this is just me talking, not the Church), it seems to be an even more craven and cowardly form of suicide than actual suicide is. At least the man who hangs himself has the courage to get it over with and write his name in the devil’s diary straightaway. Conversely, the long, sluggish, languorous sloth of the lifelong sinner is ‘easy’ and sleek. There is never a moment of even mock heroism in his death; there is no clear ‘moment’ when the deed is done and over with, for he lacks the conviction or fortitude of will to ever make such a moment. He simply sinks ever downward into death on a comfortable pillow of vice, and as I take account of my own sins during this Holy Week, I am repulsed by the undeniable reality that this cowardly, sick, hellish life was ever (and still is) mine.

What I am saying here is NOT a defense of ‘normal suicide’ — only a thought about the revolting nature of sin itself. God help us all to choose LIFE — not only for the unborn, not only towards our fellow men, but even within our own hearts. Let us refute death forever by sprinting into the arms of the Savior; let the very idea of sin disgust us so completely that it becomes illegible to us entirely. Though it may seem impossible to do so on the surface of things, God has, in His infinite mercy, given us a way forward… we must take it or die a death of deplorable dishonor.
