I've launched my first macOS app — Mottie!

It's a simple player for Lottie animations, supporting both dotLottie and JSON files. It also includes Quick Look support for dotLottie files. Mottie is built with SwiftUI and works on macOS 14 and later.

I made this app for myself because I needed a straightforward Lottie player with Quick Look and no sign-ups. I don't plan to add editing features, but I'm always open to feedback and suggestions.

Just pushed a small update to Mottie.

This release brings drag and drop support, making it easier to move files right into the app. I also gave the app icon a refresh with more vibrant colors for a cleaner, more modern look.

If you've got suggestions or run into anything that could be improved, I'd love to hear from you

Got an email about a subscription price increase from 1Password. I was already thinking about switching to other alternatives, since it doesn’t provide much more value beyond a nicer user interface.

This email is absolutely disgusting and soulless. Apparently, they’re “helping me protect what matters most” with AI-powered item naming, faster and more secure (so it wasn’t before?) device setup, and other arguably unnecessary features. Half (or even more) of the listed features are probably implemented locally, they don’t continuously consume computational resources on their servers.

What I would really appreciate is an option to disable all these unnecessary features and reduce the price. And if that’s too much to ask, then just don’t increase it. But of course, they’ll never do that, because it’s easier and more profitable to shove these state-of-the-art security features onto users.

1Password already had a great app with iCloud synchronization support. I know about the quirks and shortcomings of using iCloud as a developer, but it’s still manageable. At the very least, it existed as an option. If you wanted to risk everything with iCloud, you could. If you wanted to use 1Password’s synchronization, you could do that as well.

I’ve already renewed my yearly subscription, but I’m not planning to do it next year. Sadly, I’ll explore alternatives and probably end up with something better (either Bitwarden or Apple Passwords).

As a final word, I’d like to point out that this price increase by itself isn’t the real reason for this rant. It’s just a small part of the broader enshittification of the software industry. I guess I’ve just had enough, and sometimes you just need to say it out loud to make the feeling go away.

What AI coding costs you

Software engineering was never just about typing code. It’s defining the problem well, understanding the problem, translating the language from business to product to code, clarifying ambiguity, making tradeoffs, understanding what breaks when you change something. Someone has to do that before AGI, and AGI is nowhere close (luckily).
