Regional Press Coordinator Role

The Extinction Rebellion UK team are looking for a Regional Press Coordinator!

The main functions of the role would be to build links between the local and UK-wide press teams and to support local M&M teams to develop relationships with local media and do press work for local actions.

The role has the potential to make a significant contribution to mass mobilisation over the next few months and to maximize XR’s ability to make the huge push needed to shift our trajectory in 2020. The Regional Press Coordinator would work closely with the national press team to make sure training, resources and support are offered to local press teams and to help them realise their own ideas.

We are in the early stages of writing a training programme to train and empower more M&M people in regional and local groups. We’d love to find someone who would be interested in helping us with this and promoting it around the UK!

Voluntary living expenses are available to support this role as a full or part time position. The exact amount is dependent on need.

XR Durham and XR North East invite you and rebels from across the UK to take a stand and join the struggle to shut down the Bradley Opencast Mine. These mass actions are part of an escalating series of actions.

The local community have tried everything to stop this open-cast mine - the most destructive form of coal-mining practised in the UK.

Over 3000 people in Pont Valley logged planning objections to the mine, 55,000 petitioners demanded its rejection and Durham County Council rejected planning permission no fewer than three times before being overruled by the High Court.

Together with the local community, XR has a real chance to stop the expansion of this coal mine. If the Government won't Act Now, WE WILL!

CRUCIAL INFO FOR ALL OCTOBER ARRESTEES

The CPS has begun charging October arrestees with Obstruction of the Highway.

If you receive a charge letter in the post, please email xr-legal@riseup.net. This is so we can offer support and gather an overall picture.

The six-month time limit within which the CPS must press charges is now nearing its end. This is presumably why they are charging now.

We don’t yet know how many people will be affected, but yesterday we were contacted by a few dozen. It is possible for you to be charged with an offence different from the one you were arrested for at the time.

For newly charged rebels who don’t qualify for legal aid, funding is available for initial legal advice from protest-experienced solicitors.

When you email us, we will share info on how you can benefit from this crowdfunded access to the justice scheme.

For now, the guidance is: don’t plead guilty unless you’ve spoken to a protest-experienced solicitor.

London- At midday on the 9th we invite rebels to meet at Queen's Lawn (close to Natural History Museum) at Imperial College London. From there we will begin a subversive tour and rally around the campus before some more theatrically creative and educational actions!

The corona virus is a serious health crisis that is deeply concerning to many of us and we want to know how we can be of service to the needs of our communities.

📢 STATEMENT: Extinction Rebellion UK on the May Rebellion and coronavirus

Extinction Rebellion UK – as part of a wider movement – exists to protect life, both now and for future generations. Right now we all need to prioritise public health, follow advice from scientists and doctors, and be mindful of the most vulnerable in our communities.

Mass public gatherings will not be organised by Extinction Rebellion if it is not safe to do so. As such we can no longer make a commitment to the date of May 23rd for in-person rebellion in London based on Covid-19.
