Firing gunshots into the air during weddings and some occasions is considered a bad custom that some people have become accustomed to.

It involves many harmful consequences that make it clear it is prohibited and not permissible.

Among these harms is what was mentioned in the question: that it is extravagance indeed, even wastefulness.


Extravagance (isrāf) means exceeding the proper limit in spending on something permissible, and Allaah has informed us that He does not love the extravagant.

As for wastefulness (tabdhīr), it means spending on something impermissible, even if it is a small amount. Shooting bullets into the air falls under this category, so it is considered wastefulness.

Allaah تعالى says:⤵️

“Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils.”
Meaning: they resemble the devils in their actions.

Additionally,➡️ this act causes
clear harm, and the

Prophet ((ﷺ)) said:⤵️

“There should be neither harm nor reciprocating harm.”

How many people have we heard of who were struck by bullets fired into the air that later fell back down, killing them, injuring them, or damaging their property?


Some have been killed in their homes, others while walking in the streets and markets, and others have been injured.

Just days ago, one of our brothers was hit near a doorway by a returning bullet that struck his leg.

Many solar panels have been shattered, and water tanks damaged due to stray bullets.

It also causes harm to people, and Allaah

تعالى says

“And those who harm believing men and believing women…”

It further disturbs and frightens people, especially during times of sleep or prayer, and many children are terrified by it.

Another harm is arrogance and showing off, as some people boast about firing large amounts of ammunition.

It also wastes resources that could benefit Muslims. Ammunition should be preserved for beneficial purposes, not wasted recklessly.

Therefore, a Muslim must be mindful of Allaah and should not let their joy become a cause of others’ sadness, harm, or even death.

We also advise authorities to regulate this matter and take strict measures to prevent this phenomenon, as some people are only deterred by punishment.

Forgiveness (maghfirah) carries several meanings. One of them is concealment covering sins. So when a servant says, “O Allaah, forgive me,” or says, “I seek forgiveness from Allaah,” he is asking Allaah to conceal his sins from people.

This meaning is derived from Al-mighfar, which is what is known as a helmet something worn on the head that covers and protects the head of a fighter.

This illustrates the meaning of forgiveness:⤵️

[[covering sins.]]

Another meaning of forgiveness is the erasure of sins and the removal of their آثار (effects and consequences).

Thus, a person’s sin is wiped away, and its traces and resulting consequences are removed.

For this reason, one says: ⤵️

“So forgive me all my sins; indeed, none forgives sins except You.”

The First Meaning Of The Trial Of Death

And the trial of death (fitnat Al-mamāt) has two meanings according Ahlu-ilm(The People Of Knowledge)


The first meaning is:⤵️

It is the trial that occurs in the grave.

The servant is questioned therein about his Lord, his Religion, and his Prophet.

This is a عظيمة (tremendous) trial, and none remains firm in it except the one whom Allaah, the Exalted, makes firm.

Thus, when the hypocrite and the doubtful person are questioned, they say: “Hāh, hāh, I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it.”

The People Of Knowledge

have mentioned:⤵️

his saying “hāh, hāh” is as if he is trying to recall something like he knew something but then forgot it.

And this is even greater in regret that a person forgets the[ knowledge ]he is in need of.
So it is a tremendous trial the trial of the grave.

Whoever is made firm in it becomes among the people of happiness.

This is the first meaning of the trial of death.

The Trials Of Life Revolve Around Two Matters:⤵️

The trial of life (fitnat Al-maḥyā) includes every type of trial in this worldly life. The trial of life means the trials of living.

And all the trials of life revolve around two matters: either doubts (shubuhāt) or desires (shahawāt).

These are the trials in life.

Doubts affect one’s knowledge, such that his understanding becomes altered due to the doubts that come to him.

He begins to see the truth as falsehood and falsehood as truth.

He sees what is correct as wrong and what is wrong as correct because of the trial that has affected him in his knowledge this is the trial of doubts.

It is called a “doubt” (shubhah) because it resembles the truth and becomes confused with it.

The second type is the trial of desires, and this affects one’s will and actions.

His inclination, desire, and actions become directed toward these desires. How many people are tested through desires!

How many are tested with drinking alcohol, to the point that they see it as pleasure, joy, and relaxation.

How many are tested with listening to musical instruments and songs desires toward which the soul inclines, finding in them enjoyment and comfort.

How many are tested by looking at forbidden women and falling into immoral acts. And thus, the trials of desires are many.

So, the trial of life is either doubts or desires.

Therefore, when you seek refuge with Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, in your prayer from the trial of life, do not let this great meaning escape your mind that you are seeking refuge from every trial in life.

The Meaning Of Seeking Refuge (Istiʿādhah)

Explains:⤵️

The meaning of istiʿādhah (seeking refuge) is the request for protection.

To seek refuge is to ask Allaah to grant you protection. And ʿawdh is the repelling of harm.

Thus, ʿiyādh is the repelling of harm, just as liyādh is the seeking of good.

“He sought refuge with him” meaning he sought from him good O the One to whom I turn for what I hope for, what I desire and love, and from whom I seek refuge regarding what I fear.

People cannot mend a bone once they have broken it, nor can they break a bone once you have set it.

So ʿiyādh, istiʿādhah, and taʿawwudh all mean seeking protection, which is the repelling of harm and safeguarding against it.

The meaning of saying: Aʿūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭān ir-rajīm is:⤵️

I seek refuge in Allaah from the accursed Shayṭān.

Aʿūdhu means: ⤵️

I turn to Allaah for refuge and hold fast to Him.

Thus, istiʿādhah is turning to Allaah and seeking protection with Him clinging to His side, Glorified is He, from the evil of every evil being.

When one says “Aʿūdhu billāh,”

it means:⤵️

I seek refuge in Allaah and hold firmly to Him so that He protects me from all evils.

Then He, Glorified is He, said: ⤵️

“You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).

“Iyyāka” (You alone), according to Ahl Al-Lughah ( “the linguists.”), is a{المَفْعُوْل بِه} direct object placed before the verb.


The Original structure of the sentence is:

““We worship You and we seek Your help.”

” However, the direct object which normally comes later was brought forward, so it became: ⤵️

“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for Help” in order to indicate exclusivity and restriction.

Thus, worship and seeking help are confined solely to Allaah, Glorified and Exalted.

The meaning of “You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help” is :⤵️


We do not worship anyone besides You, nor do we seek help from anyone other than You.

All our worship is for You, and all our seeking of help is from You.

Worship is humility before Allaah, Mighty and Majestic, submission to Him, and drawing closer to Him through obedience.

So “You alone we worship”
means:⤵️

We submit to You, humble ourselves before You, and seek nearness to You.

Seeking Aid (isti‘ānah) is to request assistance from Allaah, Mighty and Majestic.

So “You alone we ask for help”

♦️Means:♦️

We ask You for help in obedience.

Here there is a benefit in mentioning seeking aid after worship, even though seeking aid itself is an act of worship.

His statement⤵️

“You alone we worship” already includes seeking aid, since seeking help is among acts of worship.

So why was seeking aid mentioned specifically?


Ahlu-Ilm ( The People Of Knowledge) have said:⤵️

it was singled out to teach the creation that they have no ability to worship Allaah except by seeking His Aid.

The Greatness Of The Creation indicates the Greatness Of the Creator

♦️Explains♦️ ⤵️

He, the Exalted, is described with greatness meaning the One who is characterized by the attributes of greatness, and whom His creation magnifies.

So He is the Most Great, glorified be He.

Among the things that make His greatness clear is the عظَمة (immensity) of some of His creations.

The greatness of these creations points to the greatness of their Creator.

Look at the creations of Allah: look at the mountains, the seas, the sky, and the earth. See how (immense) they are and how immense their creation is.

Look at the creation of the human being, the composition of his limbs, and what is within his body of organs and systems, arranged with precise order. All of this indicates the greatness of the Creator, glorified and exalted is He.

Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Said:⤵️

“I have been permitted to speak about an angel from the bearers of the Throne: the distance between his earlobe and his shoulder is a journey of seven hundred years.”

This is a created being from among the bearers of the Throne so how then is the Throne itself, which is also one of Allaah’s creations?

All of this, in its عظَمة, points to the greatness of its Creator, glorified be He.
