New Trump administration guidelines allow U.S. immigration authorities to scrutinize applicants’ social media and deny green cards over political views, with criticism of Israel increasingly treated as grounds for rejection.

Internal directives reportedly instruct officers to flag cases involving “anti-Israeli” views, broadly defining them to include pro-Palestinian statements, activism, or participation in protests. Even posts condemning Israeli genocide or calling for Palestinian rights such as “Stop Israeli terror in Palestine” could be used against applicants.

Among the cases highlighted is Turkish student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained after co-authoring a pro-Palestinian op-ed referencing the genocide in Gaza, and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, who faced deportation attempts over his advocacy.

The policy has sparked alarm among rights groups, who warn it expands the use of immigration law to suppress dissent, creating a chilling effect where immigrants, students, and residents fear detention or deportation for speaking out on Palestine, as criticism of Israel is increasingly conflated with antisemitism.

They said dozens of detainees required medical treatment upon release, as Israeli occupation forces seized multiple vessels from the flotilla attempting to break the blockade on Gaza, with organizers condemning the attack as unlawful and an act of piracy.
