We Remember and Honor LASD Detective Raul Vasquez Gama, End of Watch (EOW) May 1, 2007, Automobile Accident

On May 1, 2007, shortly before 9 a.m., Detective Raul Gama was working an undercover surveillance operation involving stolen cellular phones.  He was inside a parked van on Oxnard Street in North Hollywood as part of this operation when a teenage driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the parked van. He was transported to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank where he succumbed to his injuries. He died the day after his 20-anniversary as a member of the Sheriff’s Department.

After day 2 of Pro-Hamas protests at the University of Arizona, officers in riot gear began approaching the crowd around 11:00 p.m.

The police presence at the scene continued to grow around 11:00 p.m. with continuous warnings for protesters to clear the area under threat of arrest.

University of Arizona Police, Tucson Police, S.W.A.T. team and the Pima County Sheriffs Department were working in tandem to break up the protest. Counter protesters and onlookers crowded around the area hurling obscenities, repeatedly breaking out in chant " U-S-A".

Campus police officers at the University of Arizona in Tucson shot "chemical irritant" munitions at a gathering of protesters early Wednesday, the department said. Around 3am the encampment has been destroyed.
