Undersheriff April Tardy, Captain Richard Ruiz, and Dept members gather for the 999 for Kids Ice Cream Social.
The law enforcement radio code 999 means “Officer needs emergency help,” but, in this case, it’s not about an officer in need. It’s a reference to children in need. “999 for Kids” was created to help physically challenged children, those with Intellectual disability, children who are medically vulnerable or are victims of the most severe cases of child abuse, neglect, and family violence.
The money raised goes toward children in LA County who are our most vulnerable and who have experienced severe child abuse, neglect, and family violence. The program, which is overseen by the Sheriffs’ Relief Foundation, organized through LASD’s Special Victims Bureau and supported through donations, helps families obtain specialized medical equipment and hold events like summer camps in which these children might not be able to participate otherwise.
