Donald Trump on Monday defended hush money payments reported by his former lawyer a day after Democrats said the U.S. president could face impeachment and jail time if the transactions are proven to be campaign finance violations.

Trump, in early morning tweets, said Democrats were wrongly targeting โ€œa simple private transactionโ€ after court filings last week drew renewed attention to six-figure payments by his personal lawyer to two women during the 2016 campaign so they would not discuss affairs with Trump.

On Sunday, U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler, who will lead the Judiciary Committee when Democrats take control of the House of Representatives next month, said if the payments were found to violate campaign finance laws it would be an impeachable offense.

His Democratic counterpart on the Intelligence Committee, Representative Adam Schiff, said Trump could be indicted and could โ€œface the real prospect of jail time.

FBI: Ohio man arrested in Toledo synagogue plot, said he was inspired by Pittsburgh shooting.

A 21-year-old Ohio man accused of planning to attack a Toledo synagogue told undercover FBI agents that he was inspired both by Islamist propaganda and the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre that killed 11 people, authorities said Monday.

โ€œI admire what the guy did with the shooting actually,โ€ Damon M. Joseph wrote to an undercover FBI agent on Oct. 30, three days after the Pittsburgh attack, agents wrote in an affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

He added: โ€œI can see myself carrying out this type of operation inshallah," he said, using the Arabic word for "God willing."

A gunman shot and killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in October. Robert Bowers, a 46-year-old Pittsburgh man with social media ties to the white nationalist movement, has been charged with 44 counts of murder, firearms offenses and hate crimes in that incident.

Joseph, of Holland, Ohio, was charged Monday with one count of attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Police arrested him Friday after he took possession of two semi-automatic rifles to carry out the attack, authorities said.

Eighth graders arrested for fake school shooting threat in Maryland.

wo eighth grade students have been arrested after allegedly spreading a fake school shooting threat at a Maryland middle school.

Earlier this month, a parent contacted Aberdeen Middle School to report seeing a social media post from a student, warning students not to come to classes the next day because another student was allegedly threatening a school shooting, the Aberdeen Police Department said in a statement Friday.

After an investigation, police determined the student in question never made a threat and two eighth grade students were responsible for faking the report. One student was charged with make a false statement to a peace office and the other with disturbing school operations.

False school shooting reports "will not be tolerated," the police department said.
