Wintry storm brings rain, snow, havoc across USA; more bad weather on the way!

Snowdrifts in North Carolina. Icy roads in Oklahoma. Submerged cars in Houston.
A heavy bout of rain and wintry weather is pummeling parts of the USA and more severe winter weather is on its way, threatening a wide swath of the country, from the Carolinas to Texas.
The same winter storm that dumped heavy rains on Los Angeles last week is expected to unleash heavy snows and ice this weekend as it tracks from the southern Plains into the Southeast. Widespread power outages, delayed and canceled flights and dangerous roads are expected to continue through Monday morning when the strong storm is expected to move northeastward over the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Weather Service.

Governors in Virginia and North Carolina declared emergencies ahead in anticipation of the storm.
"It's certainly not unprecedented but it’s a major storm," said Dave Samuhel, a meteorologist with AccuWeather. "It's going to have a big impact."

In a clear sign that harsh weather may be on its way, Jim Cantore, the intrepid Weather Channel correspondent at the forefront of dangerous storms, has deployed to Boone, N.C., around 90 miles northeast of Asheville.

"I think when people wake up tomorrow morning, they're going to be staying right where they are," Cantone said in an interview with Boone Town Manager John Ward. "I think it's going to be — forgive the word — puking snow outside."

Emergency officials were bringing in extra staff and cautiously monitoring whether ice accumulates under all the snow, making travel increasingly dangerous.

"If we do, that’s going to make it treacherous to get around," said Jerry VeHaun, director of Buncombe County Emergency Services, which covers Asheville. "But we're just watching the weather and making sure we’re ready to react whichever way we need to.”

As of Saturday afternoon, there were 2,402 delayed and 342 canceled flights across the USA, according to FlightStats.com. Charlotte Douglas International Airports had the highest number of canceled flights with 106. George Bush International Airport in Houston reported 149 delayed flights.

American Airlines, United, Southwest, Delta and Frontier have begun waving ticket change fees for some weekend flights in anticipation for the storm.

Winter Storm Diego: American Airlines cancels nearly 1,000 Sunday flights due to weather.

Catching a flight on Sunday? Get ready for major travel trouble if your flight is in the path of Winter Storm Diego.

American Airlines said it has proactively canceled nearly 1,000 Sunday flights due to the storm. That is on top of 160 cancellations on Saturday.

The bulk of the canceled Sunday flights are to and from Charlotte, North Carolina, where American has a major hub. The airline said it is reducing operations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport beginning Saturday night.

All flights to and from Charlotte on American's regional partners are canceled for Sunday and more than two out of three of its other Charlotte flights are canceled.

Since Charlotte is a major connecting hub for American, the cancellations also impact passengers headed to and from destinations not affected by the storms.

Southwest Airlines has canceled four flights to and from Charlotte on Sunday in addition to canceling the last four flights due to arrive at the airport on Saturday.

Travelers are advised to check their flight status before they head to the airport.

American, Southwest and other airlines have had travel waivers in place this week, allowing passengers scheduled to fly to, from or through Charlotte and other cities to change their plans without penalty to get out of the storm's path.

Travelers who didn't change their flights are eligible for a refund if there flight is canceled, even if they have a nonrefundable ticket.

Ex-Miss Kentucky charged with sending nude photos via Snapchat to student.

A former Miss Kentucky winner has been charged with sending nude photos to a teenage student.

Ramsey Bearse, 28, now lives in Charleston, West Virginia, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. She allegedly sent obscene photographs of herself to a 15-year-old former student at Andrew Jackson Middle School in Cross Lanes, West Virginia, according to the sheriff's office.

She was charged Friday with four felony counts of distributing or displaying obscene matter to a minor.
"She is currently suspended from her teaching position," the sheriff's office said in a release. "Mrs. Bearse was released on a $10,000 property bond following her arraignment."

The student’s parent informed authorities of lewd pictures sent by Bearse that were found on the teenager’s phone, according to a criminal complaint.
Authorities say Bearse admitted to sending the photos on Snapchat.
A spokesman for Kanawha County Schools declined to comment but confirmed that Bearse was a teacher at the school.

Bearse, who was crowned under her maiden name of Carpenter, won the pageant in June 2014. She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky.

A top Chinese technology executive is facing fraud charges in the United States connected to business dealings with Iran, a Canadian prosecutor said Friday.

Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies – China's largest telecommunications equipment maker – was arrested in Vancouver on Dec. 1 as she changed planes for Mexico. Canada's Justice Department said Meng, 46, who is the daughter of the company's founder, was detained due to a United States extradition request.

John Gibb-Carsley, a prosecutor for the Canadian government, says the U.S. alleges Huawei used a shell company to gain access to the Iran market in dealings that evaded U.S. sanctions, the Associated Press reported. He urged the court not to grant bail as Meng has incentive and means to flee Canada. Fraud charges in the U.S.could bring up to 30 years in prison, Gibb-Carsley said.

Meng assured U.S. banks that Huawei and the shell company alleged to have sold American-made components to Iran, called Skycom, were separate companies, but in fact are not, according to the Canadian prosecutor. Meng contends Huawei was sold to Skycom in 2009.

Influential state media linked to China's ruling Communist Party on Friday described Washington as a "despicable rogue" attempting to "stifle" China's global rise by arranging for Meng's arrest.
