We know what today is, and LASD wants to remind everyone that driving under the influence doesn’t always mean alcohol, it includes any impairment due to illicit drugs, OTC medications, prescribed medications and marijuana (medicinal or recreational).

While smoking marijuana is permitted in a private home or at a business licensed for on-site marijuana consumption, ingesting or being under the influence of marijuana remains illegal while driving a vehicle.

California Highway Patrol estimates the cost of a DUI offense at approximately $13,500.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, people who drive immediately after using marijuana may increase their risk of getting into a crash by 25 to 35 percent because studies show that driving while under the influence of marijuana negatively impacts attentiveness, perception of time and speed and your memory. Impaired memory can affect the ability to draw from past driving experiences, especially in emergency situations.

Please keep the Corpus Christi Police officer who was shot in the line of duty this morning in your thoughts and prayers. 🙏🏽

On April 20, 2024 at 12:32 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 5400 block of Burnham Dr. in reference to a male and female involved in a disturbance with shots fired. Officers arrived at the apartments where they attempted to locate the disturbance.

The responding officers located the disturbance and made contact with a 26 year old male at the door of the apartment. As soon as officers contacted the suspect, a struggle ensued. The male suspect produced a gun, shooting and striking one of the officers. One of the assisting officers returned fire, striking the male who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The officer was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition at this time.

A 48-year-old Afghan national who illegally crossed into the U.S. back in the spring of 2023 had apparently been unmonitored for nearly a YEAR following his initial apprehension, despite being on a terrorist watchlist.
