How to focus on my work while worried to satisfy the people I work with?
Content: I've been doing collaborations with models, model agencies and cloth brands to build up my portafolio, but I feel like I'm not creating the photos I need but the ones they need. I feel creatively blocked while I'm on a shoot because I worry that I will not get the shoots they need and end up feeling frustrated. The worst part is that everyone I have work with let me do whatever I want (probably because it's for free). But I don't know how to maintain my vision douring the shoot. It's worth saying that I have about 6 months doing this, so I obviusly need to gather more experience, but I feel stucked, I want to develop my own style, but this feeling isn't letting me experiment enough to create it. If anyone had been through this and has a mantra or way of thinking about this, it will be highly appreciated.
Sorry for my english.

What are your day jobs? What are jobs that make it possible to do photography?
Content: Hey guys,
I want to eventually build my own business offering creative solutions to people (photography, videography, design, etc.)
But I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. I recognize I want and need some stability before my own thing becomes viable.
I just wanted to get a sense, what kind of safe or stable job do you guys do that pays the bills and pays for your creative endeavours?
Right now, I work as a data entry specialist / administrator and I hate it. I’m looking to go back to school or reducate myself in some way… I want a day job that is creative in some way.
Doing tedious, overly detailed work drains me mentally and I find it hard to work on my photography and side business.

I'm starting to think I'm not that great.
Content: I enjoy photography. I do. My dream is to be a filmmaker, but amateur photography has been a hobby of mine for years now.
I've never gotten a huge amount of attention for my photos outside of my family. I'm starting to think I'm just not that great at it. I still like doing it, but lately, I've gotten more solace, recognition, and happiness from writing.
I thought photography could be something I could do professionally, or even just sell a few pieces every now and then, but I'm starting to doubt that.
Any advice?

If you couldn't show or share your photographs with anyone again, would you still be a photographer?
Content:
Just a general question I was thinking about..
If you couldn't share your work anywhere (No Instagram, No Facebook, No showing friends, No selling prints) or with anyone and you were the only person who'd see your photographs, would you still take photographs? Would you still be interested in pursuing photography?
I understand its very different for actual pro photographers who pay rent with their photographs, so I guess this wouldn't apply to those who identify as a pro working photog.
I'm asking because before 2019, I was extremely used to being pretty popular on social media. I'm talking 2k-3k+ likes per photo, 100+ comments, consistently. Even if I posted 5 photos in a row, they'd all do extremely well. But the issue was I found myself going out to photograph things I thought would do well on social media vs photographing things I really felt like photographing. For example, my nudework and sunset photos were extremely popular and I'd always have the idea of how it'd be received in the back of my head. Due to alcoholism and other life issues, I started posting significantly less frequently to the point where i'd go 2-3 weeks without sharing anything and it became very consistent. Now, I don't get the same numbers (think less than 100 likes and 1-2 comments, if any) and find myself not taking my camera out with me as much as I did before. I find myself significantly less hungry for "the shot" than how I used to be years ago.
I remember around the time I realized that I was too attached to how my photos were received via social media and I actively tried to force myself out of that perspective. Trying to give alot less credence to social media responses to my photos. But I feel like... One of the biggest reasons I got into photography was that I was a very lonely/depressed person and heavily enjoyed the amount of attention/love I would get from my photos when I started shooting.

Minamata was an incredibly powerful film about photojournalism
Content: Once in a while, we get a film about photography that does some justice for us. Some of my favourites are Blow-up and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Minamata was truly a remarkable story about Eugene Smith, the war photographer, and his story on the Minamata environmental pollution for Life magazine in the 70s. I'm not a photojournalist, however, I'm a conservation photographer and found this to be absolutely inspiring. This is my favourite Johnny Depp performance so far.
Example of Eugene Smith's photography. This was the one I had seen in the past that covers a story on the war in the Pacific Theatre (WWII).
For anyone looking for inspiration in photography and love films, I recommend Minamata!

Would a job as a photographer at the mall be a good start to a career?
Content: I’ve been very interested in a career in photography for a while now, but unfortunately I’ve struggled to find a way to pursue that interest. Recently though, I saw a job posting for a photographer at my local mall. I had an interview for said job yesterday and I just got offered the position today. I’m curious thought if this would be a good start in my potential career. The job is temporary (it lasts through the Easter season) if that matters. Any advice would be appreciated.

How Do You Become a Professional Photographer?
Content: I started photography as a hobby 2 years ago but I'm starting to think I might want to pursue it as a career choice. I'm 24 and still haven't decided what I want to do in post-secondary. I do love photography, especially portraiture and aspire for the quality of my images to reach a professional level someday. So I've decided I'd like to get into it professionally. I mainly like portrait type photography but understand that other professionals often do real estate and product photography, so I'm open to that path as well. What steps would you suggest I take in becoming a professional? Any advice? What timeline do you think i should aim for, if any? Thanks in advance.

Wedding clients want to change booking
Content: Last year I booked a quick 4hr wedding that’s coming up this summer. Contract was signed and deposit paid. Today I get an email informing me that they want to change from the 4hr package to the 10hr package. If that’s what they wanted in the first place, I probably wouldn’t have booked the wedding. I’m thinking of giving them the option to book an additional photographer after our time runs out, or they can go with a different photographer all together, but the deposit will not be returned. (It states in my contract that if the couple decide to hire someone else after signing the deposit won’t be returned.) I’ve never had to deal with this situation before so I’m not sure if this is the correct approach. Keep in mind, Ive been a photographer for more than 20 years, but I only shoot weddings part time for some extra cash. Any advice would be great.

We both signed a contract which stated that I got the right to publish every picture I take.
We mainly made portrait shots and some erotic ones.
I photographed her for 3 hours, gave her 30 edited images for free and of course, posted some of my favorites on my social media.
Two out of four pictures I posted contained a bit of skin. And I really mean A BIT.
It showed her legs, thats it. No cleavage, no butt, nothing. She even posted said pictures herself.
Now she want's me to delete those two pictures from social media. How would you react?

How to Instagram photographers make money?
Content: I see all these amazing artists on Instagram posting surreal portraits but I don’t understand how they are making enough money to keep freely doing this?
For example, someone like @moodydarkroom or @johnnycinematic
I love their work and I want to get into that but how do they make a lifestyle out of it? Is there something I’m not understanding?

This sub needs to reflect on its mission
Content: It seems the overwhelming majority of posts here are about session/event photographers who are asking business questions or otherwise include "professional", "career", "sell" or another word indicating the post is about photography as a business. Meanwhile it seems everything actually worth discussing that aligns with the mission statement of the sub gets funneled into a weekly thread that quickly disappears from most feeds.
I submit for discussion that all photography as business/career questions should be routed into a weekly thread so that this sub can be about the " tools, technique and culture of photography" and not a "business of photography" sub that buries the other topics.

Advice on how to proceed with a client
Content: I recently took photos of a recurring sporting event for a client. 63 photos were taken in total, with 20 being deemed worthy of edit by my standards. Upon receipt of the photos, the client said that they were expecting more photos. I offered to take more photos free of charge at the next event of kind, and that offer was accepted. However, the client has asked me to release to them, the remaining 43 unedited photos.
I believe in only releasing my best work, so releasing unedited photos is against my principles. I'm still relatively new to professional photography, and am still getting my name out there. I'm just curious as to see how the community would recommend proceeding. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
