“Assata taught us most about discipline and about duty.”

Young Black socialist organizer and visual artist Rachel Domond spoke to Peoples Dispatch about Assata Shakur and the inspiration she leaves for Black youth fighting for a better world.

“If we want to win, we must approach our task with seriousness, with commitment, and with discipline, because the enemy that we're up against has forced our revolutionary ancestors into exile, has jailed them, has killed them.”

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, to protest the right-wing government of Santiago Peña (2023-present) and the national political structure in general.

The protest call was made on social media under the slogan “We are the 99.9%”, following several days of protests in the capital. According to the protesters, the Peña government continues to uphold a form of power based on corruption and neglects basic services, especially public health and the safety of the population.

Journalist Amado Arrieta told Peoples Dispatch: “What was demanded in the protests was an end to nepotism, an attempt to stop the advance of narco-politics, which has basically taken over the three branches of government, and more opportunities for young people. The children of politicians get the best jobs, sometimes without having the necessary skills.”

Former Venezuelan diplomat Carlos Ron told Peoples Dispatch that the sole purpose of sanctions is “to inflict pain or suffering onto the population”.

Sanctions are a failed policy as far as its stated goals are concerned, and yet they are repeatedly used by the countries in the West to punish those who dare to carry out independent policies, claimed Venezuelan scholar and former diplomat Carlos Ron regarding the reimposition of international sanctions against Iran this Sunday.

Surviving on meager amounts of animal feed ground into a porridge and risking murder, rape, abduction, and torture, journalists struggle to continue reporting in El Fasher, capital city of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

“Prices for what little food remains are astronomical,” the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a report on Wednesday, October 1. A kilogram of sugar – costing two US dollars before this war between the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) started in April 2023 – “now costs … USD 28”, while rice and flour sell at “USD 80 a kilo”.

“We have been aware that the Zionist entity’s terrorism and brutality have no limits, but we chose to sacrifice ourselves,” Khaled Boujemma, a Tunisian human rights activist and a member of the Maghreb branch of the Global Sumud Flotilla Steering committee, told Peoples Dispatch.

Day after day, Israel grows more and more audacious in its quest to impose its hegemony not only over the West Asia region, but also over the entire world, violating land, air, and international waters alike. The interception of the GSF and abduction of hundred of activists from across the world has set a new bar in the lengths it will go to preserve its project

Palestinian political activist, freedom fighter and former prisoner in Israeli jails Mr. Omar Assaf told Peoples Dispatch, "The arrest of those people of conscience by the Israeli authorities on the high seas constitute a flagrant violation of all international norms and conventions, and the international law. Therefore, all countries around the world should bear responsibility for that. Moreover, international human rights organizations are obliged to assume special responsibility in exerting pressure on the Israeli occupation."

As establishment politicians scramble to cut a deal to end the shutdown, the Democratic Party base seems eager for an even fiercer fight.

The US government shut down at midnight on October 1 after Congress failed to approve new spending bills, forcing federal agencies nationwide to halt or scale back operations. At the heart of the shutdown is a standoff between Republican and Democratic Party politicians over healthcare. Over the summer, Republican lawmakers passed Donald Trump’s sweeping “Big Beautiful Bill” that makes deep cuts to public healthcare.

“Tens of thousands of people took to the streets for the general strike in support of Palestine: this is a huge success,” Giuliano Granato of the left party Potere al Popolo reported from one of the marches.

“It shows that there is a majority in the country that is fighting for Palestine and doing what our government has not dared to do for two years.”

Hundreds of thousands of people have again taken to the streets of Italy in response to a general strike call originally launched by the grassroots union Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) and later joined by some of the country’s largest trade union confederations.

"What is being carried out against Venezuela, is not an operation against drug trafficking but rather, a regime change operation.

For the last 26 years, Venezuela has undergone a profound political transformation successfully asserting sovereignty over the world’s largest proven oil reserves primarily by using revenues to attack decades of poverty and social exclusion through social programs. It also embarked on ending Washington’s historical political influence."

Women and the LGBTQIA+ community have become the faces of resistance against the far-right Salvadoran government.

In a country where transgender women are now required to identify as “very high-risk men”, four transgender women dressed as beauty queens and surrounded by giant bouquets of flowers throw candy to the thousands of participants of this year’s Pride march in San Salvador.

President Nayib Bukele — known as the “millennial president” and an unconditional ally of Donald Trump — has significantly weakened dissent through increased state surveillance, the persecution of critical voices, and laws that benefit emerging elites.

Paraguay:
After several days of roadblocks, Indigenous communities achieved their goal. The protesters demanded the resignation of the president of Paraguayan Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INDI), the restoration of the institution’s headquarters and against recent decisions of the right-wing government of Santiago Peña.

Peña hails from the Colorado Party, one of the oldest parties in Latin America, which, incidentally, was the political base of the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989), one of the longest-serving dictators in 20th-century history..

To better understand this moment of struggle, Peoples Dispatch spoke with Amado Arrieta, a Paraguayan journalist and member of the Popular Party.

Over a hundred volunteers from the Global Sumud Flotilla remain captive in Israel after being kidnapped in international waters by occupation forces during their attempt to break the illegal sea blockade of Gaza. Those who have been released report escalating abuse by Israeli authorities, particularly targeting women and activists of Arab backgrounds, in what is likely to be a campaign to intimidate and prevent others from joining future flotillas.

“From the moment of interception, all activists were held incommunicado, with communication systems having been jammed, some of them subjected to degrading treatment and water cannons,” the Global Sumud Flotilla wrote in a statement. The legal center Adalah, which is providing legal counsel to the flotilla’s crew, echoed these concerns, saying its lawyers were initially prevented from reaching the detainees. As a result, several activists were processed without even having spoken to legal representatives.

🇵🇸 "I don’t want just me to be free. I want the Palestinian people to be free!"

Days after Israel illegally intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla and arrested over 400 participants, hundreds have been released from Israeli prisons, where they endured physical and psychological torture. Dozens still remain in detention. Freed GSF participants have emphasized that the message remains the same: Israel must end the siege and genocide on Gaza and free the over 10,000 Palestinian prisoners.
