Six people were killed last week in New Caledonia following widespread unrest triggered by changes to voting rules approved by French lawmakers. The changes would allow individuals who moved to the island after 1998 to vote in provincial elections.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, the Iranian government confirmed in a statement on Monday, May 20 after a nightlong search operation.

Raisi was a key figure in driving Iran’s push against US unilateral coercive measures domestically and alliance building with nations of the Global South.

On May 20, International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Netanyahu and Gallant stand accused of “war crimes and crimes against humanity,” including but not limited to “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare,” “wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or health,” and “intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population.”

Al-Awda Hospital in Jabaliya, northern Gaza, is once again under siege by Israeli armed forces.

Since Sunday, May 19, those inside the hospital have been unable to move, and patients trying to reach the facility have been prevented from doing so by Israeli snipers targeting hospital floors and artillery directed at the hospital’s administration department.
Israeli forces conducted a raid on May 21 in the Jenin refugee camp and killed seven Palestinians, including Dr. Aseed Jabareen, a 50-year-old surgeon and Allam Jaradat, a 48-year old teacher, both while on their way to work. Also killed was a teenage boy riding a bicycle, Mahmoud Hamadna.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called for a general election on July 4, with Labour leading the Tories in the polls. The decision came months earlier than originally anticipated. Many analysts believed that the Tories’ poor polling results, trailing 20% behind Keir Starmer’s Labour, would prompt Sunak to hold on to power until the end of the year.
