On September 27 and 28 in Lima, Peru, police violently attacked protesters demanding an end to corruption, greater security, an end to extortion by criminal groups, and the end of Dina Boluarte’s government in general.

Boluarte was the vice president of Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office in what many have called a “coup d’état”.

After that, Boluarte led a government that harshly repressed protesters demanding the return of Castillo. Nearly 60 deaths were recorded during the protests that lasted for months between 2022 and 2023.

🇵🇸 Protests have erupted in cities across the world to protest the illegal arrest of over 500 humanitarian activists by Israel.

Israel staged a massive operation at nightfall on October 1 to intercept the 40 boat-strong flotilla and impede them from breaking the blockade on Gaza and delivering life-saving humanitarian aid.

Participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla hail from dozens of countries from across the world, and have called on people internationally to demand the safe passage of their vessels, the release of activists in detention, and an end to Israel’s genocide of Gaza.

The past two weeks marked an unprecedented escalation in the central occupied West Bank, particularly in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate.

Recent developments suggest Israel may focus upcoming operations in Ramallah and Al-Bireh after its “Iron Wall” operation failed in the northern West Bank and resistance attacks have expanded to other parts of the occupied territories.

The new developments have proven that crushing Palestinian resistance in the occupied West Bank was nothing but a myth that Netanyahu’s government has chosen to believe and broadcast.

🇲🇦 Why are the people of Morocco on the streets?

Mass protests have been underway in Morocco for the last several days against record-high unemployment among youth and deterioration of essential social services, including healthcare and education.

Wahid Ben Ali of the International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA) broke down the situation in the African country where the government has invested more in stadiums than in the well-being of its people.

Tens of thousands of people mobilized around the world within hours of news breaking that Israel had attacked the Global Sumud Flotilla and kidnapped dozens of activists. Demonstrations are expected to grow in the coming days.

Marchers converged on foreign ministries and government headquarters with common demands: an end to the genocide in Gaza and support for the flotilla’s mission.

Since late August, around 50 vessels with hundreds of international activists – including journalists, health workers, and lawyers – have been sailing to break Israel’s illegal sea blockade of Gaza. They were carrying tons of vital supplies, such as food and medicine, for a population subjected to two years of relentless genocide.

The escalating the political crisis in Madagascar appears to have reached its peak on September 29, when President Andry Rajoelina announced that he was dissolving the government, following days of mass protests largely led by young people, against chronic water and power outages.

The unrest began on September 25 in the capital, Antananarivo, as demonstrators took to the streets demanding reliable access to electricity and potable water, a fundamental challenge for many Malagasy households.

What began as largely peaceful marches soon degenerated as security forces intervened decisively. Tear gas was deployed, curfews imposed, and reports emerged of beatings, mass arrests, and even use of live ammunition.

“Assata taught us most about discipline and about duty.”

Young Black socialist organizer and visual artist Rachel Domond spoke to Peoples Dispatch about Assata Shakur and the inspiration she leaves for Black youth fighting for a better world.

“If we want to win, we must approach our task with seriousness, with commitment, and with discipline, because the enemy that we're up against has forced our revolutionary ancestors into exile, has jailed them, has killed them.”

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, to protest the right-wing government of Santiago Peña (2023-present) and the national political structure in general.

The protest call was made on social media under the slogan “We are the 99.9%”, following several days of protests in the capital. According to the protesters, the Peña government continues to uphold a form of power based on corruption and neglects basic services, especially public health and the safety of the population.

Journalist Amado Arrieta told Peoples Dispatch: “What was demanded in the protests was an end to nepotism, an attempt to stop the advance of narco-politics, which has basically taken over the three branches of government, and more opportunities for young people. The children of politicians get the best jobs, sometimes without having the necessary skills.”

Former Venezuelan diplomat Carlos Ron told Peoples Dispatch that the sole purpose of sanctions is “to inflict pain or suffering onto the population”.

Sanctions are a failed policy as far as its stated goals are concerned, and yet they are repeatedly used by the countries in the West to punish those who dare to carry out independent policies, claimed Venezuelan scholar and former diplomat Carlos Ron regarding the reimposition of international sanctions against Iran this Sunday.

Surviving on meager amounts of animal feed ground into a porridge and risking murder, rape, abduction, and torture, journalists struggle to continue reporting in El Fasher, capital city of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

“Prices for what little food remains are astronomical,” the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a report on Wednesday, October 1. A kilogram of sugar – costing two US dollars before this war between the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) started in April 2023 – “now costs … USD 28”, while rice and flour sell at “USD 80 a kilo”.
