"As long as the same states that “recognize” Palestine fail to impose sanctions on Israel or make it comply with international law, the whole act remains a sham."

At the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lamine Zeine Ali Mahaman, prime minister of Niger’s Transition Government, delivered a defiant and historic speech that laid bare the aspirations of the Sahel alliance and accused France of orchestrating decades of destabilization in the region.

Zeine began by aligning Niger with the statement delivered the previous day by Malian Prime Minister Abdullah Maïga, who also spoke on behalf of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) – the political, economic, and defense alliance formed by Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso in 2023 after they severed ties with ECOWAS.

“He forcefully expressed the aspirations of our alliance and our people, with full respect for our sovereignty, the defense of our interests, and genuine cooperation with all countries enamored of peace and justice,” Zeine affirmed.

Iran rejected the invocation of international sanctions against it under the snapback provision, claiming they are illegal and unjustified. It declared that neither Iran nor any other member country of the UN is obliged to recognize and implement these sanctions.

A day after the UN sanctions were revived, a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry claimed that the three European countries, the UK, France, and Germany, along with the US, “misused the dispute resolution mechanism”, under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and UN Security Council resolution 2231, to target Iran illegally.

A week since protests began in Ecuador against the decision by Daniel Noboa’s right-wing government to eliminate the diesel subsidy, nearly 100 people have been detained and one person was killed by police repression.

The nationwide protests kicked off after Marlon Vargas, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), Ecuador’s most important social movement, called on all sectors of society to take to the streets and reject the move by Noboa.

the radical response of the Noboa government to the protests has prompted several human rights organizations to speak out. UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero noted that the executive branch has initiated a crackdown on the Indigenous movement, social organizations, and protesters in general. She also stated: “I have received reports that the Ecuadorian Armed Forces are acting in protest contexts, which is contrary to international standards on the right to assembly, even in states of emergency. Cease fire against protesters! Protesting is a right, it cannot cost lives.”

“Imperialism cannot erase the unquestionable social and economic accomplishments of Cuba during decades of the revolution,” said Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parilla, at an event in New York City on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 27.

The event, titled “Cuba and the UN: A Fight for the Global South,” was hosted by the People’s Forum, a New York City-based movement incubator, and featured Rodríguez as a speaker. Imperialism, as Rodríguez reaffirmed, “cannot make us abandon the path of socialism.”

Hospitals in Gaza remain among the main targets of Israeli assaults. Several facilities were forced to close last week due to attacks and shortages. On September 30, the Ministry of Health in Gaza warned of the “disastrous challenges faced by medical teams due to the shortage of medicines and consumables,” stressing that Israel’s actions are having devastating consequences for those injured.

Doctors Against Genocide (DAG) recently also sounded the alarm, emphasizing that renewed sieges and strikes had led to the full or partial suspension of services in several healthcare institutions, including Al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital and the specialist ophthalmology hospital. “Each shutdown denies thousands access to life-saving care and forces civilians into mass displacement,” said Dr. Nidal Jboor of DAG.

🇲🇦The mass protests witnessed on the streets of Morocco, which are likely to continue, did not emerge out of a vacuum, but resulted from historic policies that have contributed to record-high unemployment among youth and deterioration of essential social services including healthcare and education.

Prioritizing the expenditure of public finances on building stadiums for the 2030 FIFA World cup, while the situation of healthcare sector, education and employment has been drastically deteriorating, fueled popular anger.

The central demands of the protest are for the government to focus on guaranteeing free, quality public education and public healthcare for all, and invest in the people.

“The flotilla keeps alive the spirit of steadfastness – sumud – that Palestinians themselves embody,” Amirul Fahmi, a Malaysian activist working with Institut Kajian Dasar (IKD), told Peoples Dispatch.

At least 20 Israeli military vessels intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla while it was on its way to deliver food and medicine to the starved Gaza Strip. Flotilla activists reported on October 1 that their vessels were being illegally intercepted and boarded by military personnel while the ships were 75 miles away from the Gaza coast.

Before the interception, Israeli forces attempted to intimidate flotilla participants over radio. To these threats, Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila responded that the journey is protected under international law, and any effort to block it is not.

“We carry food, aid, water filters, crutches, baby formula, to people you have been starving to death,” Ávila affirmed.

On September 27 and 28 in Lima, Peru, police violently attacked protesters demanding an end to corruption, greater security, an end to extortion by criminal groups, and the end of Dina Boluarte’s government in general.

Boluarte was the vice president of Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office in what many have called a “coup d’état”.

After that, Boluarte led a government that harshly repressed protesters demanding the return of Castillo. Nearly 60 deaths were recorded during the protests that lasted for months between 2022 and 2023.

The past two weeks marked an unprecedented escalation in the central occupied West Bank, particularly in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate.

Recent developments suggest Israel may focus upcoming operations in Ramallah and Al-Bireh after its “Iron Wall” operation failed in the northern West Bank and resistance attacks have expanded to other parts of the occupied territories.

The new developments have proven that crushing Palestinian resistance in the occupied West Bank was nothing but a myth that Netanyahu’s government has chosen to believe and broadcast.

🇲🇦 Why are the people of Morocco on the streets?

Mass protests have been underway in Morocco for the last several days against record-high unemployment among youth and deterioration of essential social services, including healthcare and education.

Wahid Ben Ali of the International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA) broke down the situation in the African country where the government has invested more in stadiums than in the well-being of its people.

Tens of thousands of people mobilized around the world within hours of news breaking that Israel had attacked the Global Sumud Flotilla and kidnapped dozens of activists. Demonstrations are expected to grow in the coming days.

Marchers converged on foreign ministries and government headquarters with common demands: an end to the genocide in Gaza and support for the flotilla’s mission.

Since late August, around 50 vessels with hundreds of international activists – including journalists, health workers, and lawyers – have been sailing to break Israel’s illegal sea blockade of Gaza. They were carrying tons of vital supplies, such as food and medicine, for a population subjected to two years of relentless genocide.
