In March of this year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the UN80 Initiative, a system-wide reform effort. UN80 proposals center around reshaping how the United Nations works, including goals which are intended to make the body more efficient and cost-effective. There are more ambitious proposals, including plans to move major UN agencies including UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women from western cities such as New York to Nairobi, Kenya.
But some are calling for an even more transformative agenda of reform, which could shift long-standing power imbalances in the UN from the West and towards other regions.

Chakwera, who came to power in 2020 on promises to tackle corruption and rebuild the economy, lost to his predecessor Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
In a nationally televised address, Chakwera acknowledged the people’s verdict, saying:
“To the majority of you who voted, this outcome is a reflection of your collective will to have a change of government. And so, it is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution. France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Andorra also joined the move on Monday, September 22, followed by the Republic of San Marino, which announced its recognition on Tuesday September 23.
The new wave of recognition raises the number of sovereign states that have recognized Palestinian statehood to 159 out of 193 member states at the United Nations, representing over 80% of the international community.

Across East Africa, solidarity with the people of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is gaining momentum, as activists, intellectuals, and workers draw inspiration from the revolutionary path being charted by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
On September 19, 2025, a forum was convened in Nairobi by the Ngong Social Justice Center Revolutionary Socialist League (RSL) and Ukombozi Library to commemorate the second anniversary of the AES. The event’s theme was “Two Years on: Looking At the Alliance of the Sahel”.
The gathering started with the screening of a documentary on Modibo Keïta, Mali’s first president and a leading Pan-Africanist, produced by African Stream. The discussions that followed highlighted the deep historical links between Keita’s socialist vision and the present-day anti-imperialist wave sweeping across the Sahel.
