Immigrant worker and father Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez was shot dead in the Chicago suburb of Franklin Park on September 12 after he was stopped by ICE agents in his vehicle. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), alleges in a public statement that he was shot after he “resisted arrest, attempted to flee the scene and dragged an ICE officer a significant distance with his car.”

The fatal shooting comes amid Trump’s crackdown on immigrant workers in the form of “Operation Midway Blitz”, an immigration enforcement escalation announced by DHS on September 8. The Trump administration has officially described the operation as targeting immigrants DHS claims have criminal records. Trump’s DHS has presented the operation as retaliation against “sanctuary city” policies, local measures in more progressive areas designed to protect immigrant workers from ICE raids. The administration has used the effort to sharpen its attacks on what it calls “Democrat-run” cities, with Chicago singled out as a prime target.

Characterized by land concentration, monoculture of commodities for export, deforestation for agricultural expansion, and the intensive use of pesticides and water, this model is proving increasingly unsustainable. In 2023 alone, 3.7 million hectares of forest were cleared worldwide, largely to make way for livestock and agribusiness crops.

Ecuador’s right-wing president, Daniel Noboa, announced that he will eliminate the state subsidy for diesel fuel.

During the two election campaigns he has participated in, Noboa promised that he would not eliminate the diesel subsidy because it would “generate inflation”. However, on September 12, a group of ministers informed the entire country about that exact measure.

In fact, although it has been a tradition for presidents to personally announce such measures, Noboa decided not to appear on camera to report on the controversial decision. Instead, four cabinet ministers announced that the elimination of the subsidy would be offset by various measures, such as providing financial assistance to more families and subsidizing public transportation to prevent fare increases, among others.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in the occupied city of Jerusalem on Sunday, September 14, to discuss Israel’s plans for ending its ongoing genocidal aggression on Gaza, after it ruined the ceasefire talks with its assault on Qatar last week.

Rubio’s visit to Israel also came two days after the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the New York declaration on the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of the two-State solution on Friday, September 12. The majority of countries voted in favor of the declaration. A total of 142 out of the 193 member states of the General Assembly voted in favor of the resolution backing the declaration. Ten states, including Israel, voted against and 12 abstained.

Criticizing the decision, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, described the General Assembly in a post on X as “a political circus” that is “detached from reality”. “Israel utterly rejects the decision of the UN General Assembly this evening,” Marmostein said.

In the largest protest for Palestine in New Zealand’s history, tens of thousands of people marched through central Auckland calling on the New Zealand government to impose immediate diplomatic and economic sanctions on Israel to halt the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Aotearoa for Palestine, the Palestinian- and Māori-led group that organized the demonstration, estimates that 50,000 people took part in The March for Humanity. The turnout was so vast that as the front of the procession reached its final rallying point at Victoria Park, people were still filing onto Queen Street from the starting point at Aotea Square, a distance of 2.1 kilometers.

The march was endorsed by over 150 organizations including labor unions, human rights and environmental projection NGOs, Māori leaders, and community organisations across New Zealand.

Ethiopia has inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, in a move hailed at home as a triumph of self-reliance but viewed by Egypt and Sudan as a threat to their water security.

The USD 5 billion megaproject on the Blue Nile, one of the Nile’s two main tributaries just 14 kilometers (9 miles) from the Sudanese border, was opened on September 9. Stretching 1.8 kilometers wide and rising 145 meters tall, the GERD is designed to generate 5,150 megawatts (MW) of electricity, more than doubling Ethiopia’s existing capacity and rivaling major dams like the Aswan High Dam in Egypt or the Inga dams in DRC. Officials say the dam will not only address chronic domestic power shortages but also allow the export of surplus electricity, fueling industrialization and economic growth.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, presiding over the inauguration, hailed the project as both a national and continental achievement, saying, “The Renaissance Dam is a testament to Ethiopia’s resolve and a beacon for Africa’s future,” describing the dam as proof that African nations can undertake transformative projects without external dependency. He added that the facility will “provide clean energy, light up the region, and change the history of black people.”

Last week, US President Donald Trump demanded that his European allies impose a 100% tariff against China and India for importing oil from Russia. He apparently promised the European envoy that he would match Europe and impose similar tariffs against both countries.

Trump has accused China and India of funding the war in Ukraine by importing oil from Russia. This was confirmed by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday in an interview with Reuters. He claimed that his country will not impose more tariffs on China and India over Russian oil imports until the Europeans do it.

In response, China reiterated that no amount of external pressure or coercion will make it compromise its “sovereignty, security and development interests” and warned that if its “legitimate rights and interests are harmed” in any way it will “resolutely take countermeasures to safeguard” them.

A devastating natural disaster has deepened Sudan’s already overwhelming humanitarian crisis. On August 31, 2025, a massive landslide, triggered by weeks of relentless heavy rainfall, wiped the village of Tarsin off the map in the Jebel Marra mountains of Darfur. Entire families were buried alive under tons of earth and rock as their homes collapsed in seconds. Initial reports from local authorities and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), one of the organizations controlling the region, describe the scene as apocalyptic. Estimates suggest that over 1,000 people perished in a single morning, with only one survivor pulled from the rubble.

Tens of thousands of students, teachers, and workers will march in the streets in cities across Argentina on September 17, for the Federal University March. This will be the third mass protest to defend university funding against Argentine President Javier Milei’s austerity policies. The protest will coincide with a teachers’ strike that is taking place in national higher education institutions.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Milei vetoed the University Financing Law, which was set to increase funding for Argentina’s public universities. The University Financing Law was approved by the Senate on August 22, 2025, and was intended to:
-Adjust teaching and non-teaching salaries in line with inflation
-Update operating expenses
-Provide funds for infrastructure, scholarships, strategic careers, and academic activities
-Progressively increase the university budget from 1% of GDP in 2026 to 1.5% in 2031

The Global Sumud Flotilla has launched the final leg of its journey to Gaza, with at least 40 boats expected to converge in the Mediterranean after departing ports in Tunisia, Italy, and Greece. The fleet includes the Alma and the Family Boat, both of which suffered drone attacks earlier this month while docked at Sidi Bou Said. “As Israel escalates its ground invasion and the UN confirms genocide, our urgency is clear,” the coalition wrote on social media. “We remain steadfast and united: we sail to break the siege, to end the genocide, and to stand with Palestine.”

This is the largest attempt yet to break Israel’s sea blockade of Gaza since the genocide began, with the flotilla carrying tons of essential supplies. For their intention to bring food and medicine to starving people, participants have faced attacks and threats from Israeli authorities, forcing organizers to adjust plans in recent days. “As a result of these changes, and in anticipation of increasingly hostile conditions, we had to make a difficult decision to reduce the participant capacity on several vessels departing to Gaza,” the coalition stated. Among those who returned home was Belgian physician Hanne Bosselaers, who urged the world to keep its attention on both the ongoing genocide and the flotilla’s progress.

On September 15, 2025, SUNTRACS and FRENADESO, together with ALBA Movements and the International People’s Assembly, along with Saúl Méndez and Jorge Guzmán, leaders of the popular movement in Panama, held a press conference to denounce and repudiate the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States Army and the government of José Raúl Mulino, in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean once again being threatened by imperialism and the advance of militarism in the region.

“Since Donald Trump took office, the United States has sought to reposition itself militarily in highly strategic locations in our region, and Panama is a key geopolitical hub thanks to the Panama Canal. This vital artery of global trade puts the interests of the United States at odds with the ongoing trade war with China,” stated ALBA Movements.

This relates to Trump’s narrative, in which he claimed that the Communist Party of China owned the canal, operated two important ports, and that those ports could be converted into Chinese military bases, and that this geopolitically endangered US interests in Panama. Under that narrative, once he took office, he began to intensify aggression and pressure on the Panamanian territory.

Since the start of his second term, Trump has implemented unprecedented changes to environmental policy in the United States, deregulating and removing historic protections.

In just eight months in office, Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement, moved to open Alaskan wilderness to oil drilling, set plans to begin deep-sea mining in US and international waters, moved to roll back the EPA’s scientific basis for regulating greenhouse gases, slashed clean-energy investments, moved to repeal pollution limits on fossil fuel power plants, and had the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launch “the biggest deregulatory action in US history.”

Activists from the anti-war group CODEPINK confronted US President Donald Trump and his cabinet at a restaurant in Washington, DC on September 9. The disruption made national headlines and (evidently) sent the Trump administration into a frenzy.

At the restaurant on September 9, peace activists got surprisingly close to Trump and cabinet members including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, shouting “Free DC, free Palestine, Trump is the Hitler of our time!” Trump appeared to react with visible frustration as he gestured for his security to remove the protesters, saying “Get them out of here.”

“What they are doing to this country is really subversive,” Trump said. RICO charges, or charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, were originally intended to combat organized crime. But in an unprecedented move, they have been deployed against 61 activists who opposed the construction of a multi-million dollar police training facility in Atlanta, known as “Cop City” by Georgia’s Attorney General Chris Carr. After a legal battle of 2 years, the charges were finally dismissed a few days ago.

🇦🇷 Tens of thousands marched on the streets of Argentina in defense of public health and education.

Last week, Milei vetoed laws that would increase the budgets for pediatric hospitals as well as universities. On Wednesday, the same day as the march, the Chamber of Deputies rejected Milei's vetoes and pushed forward the laws' approval.

By noon on September 18, approximately 450,000 people had taken to the streets and workplaces across France. Coming just a week after nationwide blockades under the slogan “Let’s Block Everything” (Bloquons tout), Thursday’s strikes and assemblies were called by trade unions and confederations determined to resist another round of austerity measures.

“There are thousands and thousands of strikes in all workplaces,” Sophie Binet, head of the General Confederation of Labor (Confédération générale du travail, CGT), said during one of the marches. “Schools are largely closed. Daycare centers, swimming pools, libraries, and many factories are closed. The entire transportation sector is also affected by strikes. In short, today workers are rising up to say that they can no longer endure this endless night of Macronism.”

A US immigration judge has ordered the deportation of pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil to Algeria or Syria. In an order dated September 12, Louisiana Judge Jamee Comans leaned into Trump administration allegations that in his permanent residency application, Khalil failed to disclose his work with UNRWA and the Syria Office at the British Embassy in Beirut, along with his ties to a pro-Palestine student group at Columbia University. Comans thus denied Khalil’s application for a waiver of removability, a legal order that waives a particular ground for deportation, permitting an individual to stay in the United States, and ordered his deportation – in what her ruling states as “the interests of this country.”

Political tension is mounting in The Gambia following the arrest of four anti-corruption protesters and the controversial removal of the country’s auditor general. The government’s actions have been condemned as a major setback for democracy and accountability in the West African nation.

Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), in a statement said they had “credible information suggesting that this abrupt redeployment was intended to shield certain institutions, including the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), from much-needed scrutiny. By moving the Auditor General into a ministerial role, the President effectively places him in a position where he can be dismissed at will, thereby undermining the independence of the auditing function.”

“It is worth recalling that since 2021, the government has refused to make public the auditor general’s reports on government institutions. If this latest decision is indeed an attempt to silence oversight and accountability, we strongly condemn it in its entirety.”
