US President Donald Trump’s White House meeting with European leaders on Monday, August 18, ended with the promise of security guarantees for Ukraine.

The guarantees are part of a series of incentives being offered to the Eastern European country in exchange for signing a potential peace deal with the Russians that would end more than three years of war in Ukraine.

In Washington, DC itself, residents are continuing to “resist” the incursion of federal forces, says DC-based journalist Esther Iverem.

DC residents are “documenting the police, the National Guard, and these different federal agencies here as they harass residents and are arresting people simply trying to go to work. Uber drivers, delivery people, men working in construction as they leave the Home Depot, it’s very targeted.”

The spokesperson of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Majed Al-Ansari confirmed during a press conference on Tuesday, August 19, that the main mediators of Gaza ceasefire negotiations (Qatar and Egypt) received a “positive response” from Hamas to the latest ceasefire proposal that same day.

Gaza ceasefire negotiations were stalled by an unprecedented stalemate for the last month, which analysts believe was in favor of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has worked relentlessly to perpetuate the genocidal aggression on Gaza to serve his personal political interests.

However, Netanyahu’s government now faces a new reality, after around one million Israeli people took part in mass protests in different areas across the territories occupied by Israel on Sunday, August 17.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he will sanction officials who have facilitated the implementation of the Cuban brigade program. Cuba has asserted the program will continue.

According to Rubio, the work of Cuban doctors working in other countries is “forced labor”. The decision is part of a tightening of measures against the Caribbean island, which are in addition to the economic and commercial blockade imposed on the island as a means of punishment against the revolutionary process that began in 1959.

The Trump administration increased the bounty on the head of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro for alleged charges of drug trafficking.

"This accusation, particularly amplified under the Trump Administration, is a calculated smokescreen to justify a long-standing agenda: the overthrow of the Venezuelan government and the seizure of its vast oil and mineral resources. A closer examination of the facts reveals a country that has actively fought drug trafficking on its own terms and a US government with a clear and consistent history of destabilizing independent countries in Latin America."

#PeoplesHistory | Revolutionary and leader of the Black Panther Party Huey P. Newton was assassinated on this day in 1989.

Newton’s Black Panther Party rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s for raising the revolutionary consciousness of the oppressed Black communities in the United States. Newton’s writings and leadership have left a permanent mark on the Black liberation movement and the socialist movement broadly.

Newton elevated the Panthers to the role of internationalist revolutionary socialists who sought to fight US imperialism in order to liberate the most oppressed communities within the country.

Newton, like many others in the Black liberation movement, was a target of the FBI’s COINTELPRO, which sought to sow division between revolutionary leaders and organizations.
