A major part of the political canon of liberalism is the “sacrosanct” defense of the alternation of power. In other words, the fact that a person does not remain in power indefinitely is a sign of the vigor and health of a modern republican political system. According to this canon, the lack of alternation is usually a clear symptom of a totalitarian drift.

However, history shows us that historical judgments are just that: judgments, subject to circumstances and limited by potential political benefits. Alternation is therefore desirable when the leader is inconvenient, but not when he or she helps to sustain a given geopolitical order.

🇧🇫This weekend marked the 42nd anniversary of Burkinabe leader Thomas Sankara’s rise to power, a defining moment in the struggle for Pan-Africanism and against imperialism. Ousted and assassinated by colonial powers threatened by his vision of self-determination, land reform, and liberation from neocolonial rule, his legacy remains an inspiration for the revolutionary people of the world.

Today, the torch is being carried by the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), who have rejected French military presence and are breaking with the entire neocolonial order, while charting a path rooted in sovereignty, self-reliance, and Pan-African solidarity.

🇧🇷 The Lula government in Brazil has once again achieved Brazil's exit from the UN Hunger Map.

On August 5, the Brazilian president gave an emotional speech to the country's National Council for Food Security celebrating the achievement. Lula shared his personal experience with hunger and poverty and emphasized that alleviating hunger and poverty must be a primary goal of all governments.

Brazil had exited the UN Hunger Map in 2014, but returned in 2021 under the neoliberal, far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro.
