In a series of quiet diplomatic overtures, the US has approached governments across the continent with proposals to host deportees, including individuals with alleged criminal convictions.

The Trump administration has opened a new front in its hardline immigration policy, pushing several African countries to accept deported migrants from the United States, many of whom are not nationals of the countries they would be sent to.

🇵🇸 The people of Belgium block weapons shipments to Israel

Human Rights and pro-Palestine activists from Belgium are engaged in a struggle to block an arms shipment from Antwerp to Israel. The shipment includes parts of tanks and vehicles that would have been used to continue perpetrating the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the oppression of Palestinians in the West Bank.

NGOs and activists are taking the Flemish government to court to stop arms exports to Israel. As part of the Genocide Convention, states are obliged to take any actions necessary to prevent genocide, which has been ongoing in Gaza for over 20 months now.

“Al-Awda believes that the silence of the international community and the failure of humanitarian organizations to take decisive action to break the medicine blockade have normalized this blockade as a chronic emergency rather than confronting it as a crime that must be stopped immediately,” the Awda Health and Community Association wrote.

Critics of the Trump administration’s approach say that the consistent objective across all of his engagements is to align Latin American and Caribbean countries behind the geopolitical interests and ambitions of the US. The question is how far the US government is willing to go to achieve that.

For now, despite the abrasiveness of Trump’s approach, it seems that most governments in Latin America favor reaching agreements that will resolve any diplomatic or economic crises quickly.

But, how long can this model of diplomacy last without deeply damaging US-Latin American relations? This is a gamble that Trump is still risking, and it is still uncertain.

For the time being, the elections will be contested among the three well-known candidates.

However, not all the cards are yet on the table in a country that seems to be crossed by very old powers that could use all kinds of mechanisms to tilt the political balance in their favor. The elections are still several months away, and the candidates know it. That is why the electoral campaign will be more a test of strategic endurance than of speed.

#PeoplesHistory | Today, the heroic Greek child Iro Konstantopoulou was born. She was only 13 when the Nazi-Fascist forces of the Axis invaded Greece, and from a very young age, she risked her freedom and life to fight against them. She stole valuable information and monitored troop movements.

In 1944, she was part of a group that successfully blew up a train carrying ammunition. However, she was arrested and endured days of torture and was transported to the Haidari concentration camp, near Athens. An Axis firing squad executed her at age 17, alongside 49 other members of the resistance, just a little over a month before German troops were expelled from Athens by the Greek resistance.
