🌍Historic speech by MST leader at the BRICS Summit

João Pedro Stedile, leader of Brazil’s Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST), delivered a landmark address at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro — the first time that there was civil society participation in a heads-of-state session in the summit’s history.

Speaking on behalf of the BRICS Civil Council — referred to in Brazil as the “Popular Council” — Stedile presented policy proposals developed by seven thematic working groups focused on health, education, ecology, culture, finance, digital sovereignty, and human rights. Over 120 organizations contributed to the process, with key demands compiled into a document submitted to BRICS leaders.

The MST leader warned that the world is facing a serious crisis of Western-led global governance, threatening democracy and national sovereignty. “If we are to save human civilization,” Stedile stated, “we must build new mechanisms of international cooperation.”

On the day the proscription of the direct action group Palestine Action took effect in Britain, Counter Terrorism police in London arrested 27 people during a peaceful protest.

Demonstrators held signs reading “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action,” in front of a monument to non-violent resistance figure Mahatma Gandhi. Among those arrested were an 80-year-old priest and several public services workers, fueling widespread disbelief at Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s intensifying crackdown on the Palestine solidarity movement.

In Bangkok, there were familiar scenes as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended on 1 July by the kingdom’s Constitutional Court in what many interpret as yet another judicial coup against the party which forms the beating heart of Thailand’s long-running Red Shirt Movement.

#PeoplesHistory | Today, is the death anniversary of Ghassan Kanafani. He was a revolutionary writer, artist, and fighter for Palestinian liberation.

On this day in 1972, the Israeli Mossad assassinated him with a car bomb — killing not only Kanafani, but also his 17-year-old niece, Lamees.

His words still ring true: "The Palestinian cause is not a cause for Palestinians only, but a cause for every revolutionary."

With over 100 confirmed fatalities, including 28 children, from a massive flash flood in central Texas, the state is reeling from one of the deadliest flooding disasters in the last century.

“The reality is that information just did not get disseminated in a way that communicated any sort of urgency to the people on the ground,” said Brianna Griffith, a community organizer based in Texas, who is coordinating a community-based response network to fill in gaps in the state and federal government response.

🇧🇷 Brazilian President and co-founder of BRICS, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, spoke at the 17th BRICS summit to promote a new development paradigm that comes from the Global South and avoids the current capitalist system that, as Marx said, "tends to destroy its two sources of wealth: nature and human beings."
