🇨🇩#PeopleHistory | Today, on the anniversary of his brutal assassination, we remember the Congolese Pan-Africanist and African Liberation Fighter Patrice Lumumba.

Lumumba was a leader of the Congolese struggle for independence and the newly liberated country’s first prime minister. Within ten weeks of being elected, Lumumba’s government was deposed in a coup and he was imprisoned. From prison Lumumba wrote a letter to his wife Pauline. He said, “The day will come when history will speak. But it will not be the history which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations. It will be the history which will be taught in the countries which have won freedom from colonialism and its puppets. Africa will write its own history and in both north and south it will be a history of glory and dignity.”

His brutal assassination on January 17, 1961 was carried out in collusion with the CIA, Belgium, France, and England.

As Pan Africanism Today wrote, “On this day, January 17, let us remember Patrice Lumumba's unwavering dedication to the struggle for the Congo's political and economic independence. His vision of a united, free, and prosperous Africa remains an inspiration to all people struggling against the shackles of imperialism and colonialism - from the Congo to Palestine and beyond.”

US President Joe Biden has commuted the life sentence imposed on Peltier, who is 80 years old and is suffering from severe health ailments due to his imprisonment. Peltier has spent the majority of his life (nearly half a century) in prison.

This commutation will enable Mr. Peltier to spend his remaining days in home confinement, yet he was not pardoned for the crimes which he has insisted for over 50 years, that he did not commit.

On Monday, January 20, as thousands were taking to the streets to protest Donald Trump’s inauguration, Trump himself signed a barrage of executive orders with broad implications.

These orders were largely an attempt to reverse many of the moves of the Biden administration, in particular Biden’s most progressive policies on immigration, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, and efforts to combat climate change.

🇵🇸"No human being can withstand such circumstances, we were literally in a graveyard of the living."

Aseel Saleh of Peoples Dispatch spoke to recently released Palestinian prisoners and advocates about the experience in Israeli prison. Israeli authorities have subjected prisoners to severe mistreatment, many imprisoned under the infamous "administrative detention" ordinance, which allows them to take Palestinian prisoners without trial for months.

Since October 7, 2023, thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israel have been subjected to violations of International Law and degrading treatment by Israeli Occupation Forces and Authorities.
